OP, let me tell you what happened to me so it doesn't happen to you.

I didn't forget to update my clone. Yet I lost a good bit of skill points anyway. What happened was, I had a long skill training. When skills train, apparently the skill point counter doesn't stay current. I kept checking the counter, and my clone seemed fine. But it wasn't, because unbeknownst to me, my skills had surpassed my clone's ability to preserve them because of this... bug... feature... whatever it is. So I died, lost skill points, filed a petition, didn't get reimbursed.

Long story short, if you have a skill training as you always should, PAUSE THE TRAINING to get the updated skill point count.

Anyway, I didn't quit after this debacle, and arguably the loss wasn't even my fault because I did my due diligence in checking my clone. So don't quit, just hang in there and get back in the saddle again. It has happened to us all.

I agree that does suck and have noticed that issue myself when working out which clone grade to select ^ I suggest you try downloading evemon which gives you up to date information and also warns when your skill clone is out of date.

Welcome to the one refreshing game where screwing up actually has a tangible consequence. For me it's nice to have a change of pace, and not have everyone just respawn.
There is a reason everyone in EvE is so damn paranoid, and that's because the people who aren't get ****** in every orafice at once. That is half the fun, though; sure it causes some players to leave, but it also leads to the retention of others.

I suppose it would make sense to have a reminder since they give 'don't be stupid" warnings about other, more insignificant things, but at the end of the day, it's your own damn fault. I run EvEHQ, and that gives me a nice big clone out of date warning, and I can safely say, in 5 years of playing, the only XP loss I have suffered was the penalty for losing a T3.

Two kinds of eve players:

1. Those who play for a few weeks to maybe a month. Quit and never to be seen again.
2. Those who play for about 3-6 months, are hooked for life.

Either youll be 1 and we will never see you again or youll be 2 and I will see you back soon.

The thing that gets me is i dont see anyone choosing to take a lower clone. When you undock you are risking what ever your flying and when it dies it was your choice but skill losses are only mistakes never choices.

Exactly, it is simply far to easy to avoid the consequences of pod loss, all you have to do is simply click a button to update your clone. At the moment killing a pod is just a bonus but it doesn't really mean that much enless the player was fitted with ridiculous implants.

Killing a pod should be the ultimate means of destroying a player. Then ransoms and bounties would actually mean something, and killing your most hated opponents pod would be all the more savoured, and also would actually give you an in game benefit over the players by reducing their SP.

Eve would just be a much better and improved game if there were more consequences for losing your pod, I think it was a big mistake for CCP to go back on this general principle.

Clones and SP lost after death. I've dabbled in PVP and had a real go at faction warfare in the last few weeks. However, being a PVP noob I routinely die and lose the occasional pod. On two occasions I've forgotten to update my clone after death and I've now been set back 20+ days in training. Is this feature necessary? After death, I expect most pilots will be eager to re-enter the fight but forget to fulfill this arbitrary mechanic. Is this isk-sink worthwhile at the expense of disheartened subscribers who leave?

At this point I'm looking at almost a month of re-training. Since this may happen again, I just don't want to put up with this risk.

I think, its probably best you quit eve. Gimme your stuff on the way out

I was hooked for life my second day in. And my 3rd day in I started my second account...

Make pod death meaningful, have it erase the harddrive of whatever is running the Eve client at the time.

if it's fitting with eve's harsh, bleak universe ethos, why is the clone SP and clone upgrade data API accessible? aura or EVEMon will tell me if my clone upgrade is insufficient. aura will even alert me.

I guess if you don't have a smartphone then you deserve to lose a month's training.

How about the client explode killing the user upon pod death? :) Then a pod death would be really meaningful.

Permadeath is a stupid idea as you lose every inch of progression you've made with your character in one instant. So I guess you were just being ret@rded there.

It's been this way for years OP, doesn't need to be changed. What they could do is add a pop up to remind you to upgrade when your skill points are greater than your current clone, one that can be disabled like all the others. That might be helpful. Anyway, as the others have stated, it's your responsibility to keep them upgraded, so pay attention. Blink

I think there should be an automatic Eve Mail reminder whenever your clone gets out of date or after you get podded. If Google Calendar can do this for me, I'd think the science fictiony super computers of the Eve universe could handle the task.

Permanent death would be the only mechanic really harsh but "they" don't want it. That's why they play Eve online and claim to be uber tough instead of playing games with real consequences for actions. (Lineage II ho noes too hard and there's no space ships...)

They don't want neither to get SP loss when killed by concord. They just want Concord protection instead of getting a real pair and move on to null, instead it's blob excuse here blob excuse there carebears are all pussies etc etc etc. We know who are the pussies and the majority of those are not high sec carebears.

They don't want neither to see OGB go permanently and definitively away, the day this will happen I'll get my self drunk reading forum tears from them, ho hell I'll be trolling them hard until I get forum banned.

They want T3 frigates with heavy cruiser HP and Pirate cruisers DPS.

Nothing new, same old rabble, same rage quitting pussies as soon as something that touches their tràlàlà changes etc etc.

I second that...

But I'd like to add a secondary consequence on top of it. Namely an orbital bombardment in the real world that uses your current global coordinates as a bullseye for the strike.

OP is right, this mechanic doesn't really add much to the game besides being an annoyance to the person who did or did not update their clone. But, rather than automating it and taking away the meaningful and significant consequence to a person's actions (or lack of action, in this case), I say the fix to this problem is to add SP lost to pod loss mails. Now that's adding content Lol

Yeah it is so bad an idea that is why CCPs next MMO World of Darkness has permadeath...

Two of the defining characteristics of a carebear are wanting other players to play the way the carebear wants and whining on the forums for the game to change when they don't. Yet I see more threads on these forums from gankers than I do miners whining about wanting the game changed to suit them.
