Stepping stones toward Golem?

I'm currently running a drake to do mostly lvl 3 mission and have a goal of getting at some point in a golem. I am currently skilling my way up for battleship but all Caldari ship seems to favor Cruise missile while the Golem looks more like a torpedo boat. Is it the most efficient stepping stone to still go the cruise missile way while skilling and then switching to torpedo or am I missing something?

Hey Frostys,

I run a torpedo Golem and it's awesome. It's perfect for those up close missions like:
*Damsel in distress
*Angel extravaganza

Though most of the time I find myselve using Javelin's instead of Rage just because of the range. With Javs I can hit up to 54 km, with Rage only 34 km ~.

It's a very situational boat and by far not suited for all missions.
To have good damage application with it, it also requires some faction mods.

I would suggest getting into lvl4's first with a regular battle ship, getting used to how they are, aggro managemend etc,...

Edit to tackle your question:
IIMHO Cruise missiles are worth it and can be used on all ships, torpedoes not so much. So since you're skilling for a golem in the end, I would advise to train the t2 cruise missiles.
The only time I use torpedoes are on stealth bombers and my golem, for all other ships I fly (caldari) I use cruise missiles.

1. Cruises. The thing is you can train cruise missiles because CNR uses them very well. You'll have like ~700 DPS with like 120+km range which is a life-saver for many missions.

2. Torpedoes. You use Torps only on Stealth Bombers and Golem. In other words Torps are not the good thing to use if you're in the wrong ship and this weapon system is a little bit crappy. Almost anything outperforms them.

3. Marauders. Golem is the Torp boat and performs very bad when fitted with anything but Torps. The sad thing is Golem is the worst marauder and if you can you should train for something else. Why Golem is bad? 2 things kill this ship's performance:
a) Torps. As I said before, this weap system is bad. Guns outperform them in almost every situation.
b) Painters. You are to use Painters on Golem, otherwise it performs worse than a rookie ship. Painters are the bad idea because they have range and cycle time. Cycle time means you have to wait Painter finishing it in order to dps the new target. Range means you loose dps whenever you're out of painter effective range.

So there you have it: if you train Torps you will be able to use them only on 2 types of ships.
If you train for Cruises you'll be able to use CNR/Raven/Navy Scorp.
Or just train for everything and test things out by yourself :D

Just read This.
If that link didn't convince you that Golem is a crap then you should go for Torps for sure.

Whatever.

Don't know if this is the optimal, but I went this way:
Drake -> Raven (2 days) -> CNR (4 months) -> Golem

Don't know what missions people are flying to need the 4 target painters, I can easily do my missions with 2xTP's. The range is the only thing, at it is a big one. With 2xT2 rigs and +6 velocity implant and other Missile skills at V, I can hit with faction torps reliably at 41KM (EFT says 45.4, but it's lying). Because of that, you can do effectively only certain missions. But if every ship in that misc IS in that range - mission goes down fast (I can finish Enemies Abound 3/5 in <25 minutes).
3xVolley per Big BS with no TP, 2xVolley per faster BS with 1xTP, 1x Volley per BC with no TP, 1xVolley per C with 2xTP. And the drones take on all the frigates.

BTW, they buffed torps during last expansion, now they are affected by other missile skills and thus they do more damage with less TP's.

CNR -> Raven is a downgrade if not for torps with its abysmal projection and application. Actually, in most missions, it's a downgrade, period.

Thanks for all the answer. I guess I'll have to go toward another goal. The support skill are not wasted at least I guess...
