Yet another noob question, how do we use voice chat in game?

I got as far as downloading the Vivox plugin for EVE Voice, I've even configured the voice chat from the options screen and ran an echo test to try some audio fonts. However, I figure if it IS working I'd hear occasional chatter, but all I hear is space (As in the game sounds, but nothing from other players). Do I need to sign into a particular channel like with the text chat, or is there just something wrong? Or am I actually doing everything right but no one else is using voice chat? I'm still in kind of the noob systems after all.

Few use voice chat. Example, my small corp used Skype. Larger corps use Ventrillo, Teamspeak, or Mumble.

You have to enable voice for the channel you are in. Been a long time, but I seem to remember an orange megaphone icon when it was active (of course, I could just be senile and imagining things). Check the chat window options.

There are some options in the general settings (ESC) for it. I think to make it auto-join fleet / corp channels, but I've not really paid attention to it. This is also where you pick things like the push-to-talk button.

Most players used ts2, ts3, vent, or mumble. Though if your dead set on useing eve voice you have to join a channel from your chat window I believe you right click on an icon in it.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

Well, I was hoping to be able to use the in-game chat, seeing as it'll be easier to manage it if it's integrated into the game, but if no one uses it then there's really no point.

TS is Teamspeak right? I remember using them for a flight sim but that was ages ago. I think it was pay-to-use though, but I'm not sure. If it is proprietary then it'll depend on how much it is... I'm not completely adverse to investing money into a game but I am a college student so... well, you know. (All your monies are belong to student loans, lol)

To be fair I abstain from playing MMO's that require a monthly subscription, for that reason, I only made an exception for EVE because of the PLEX program, which when you think about it is a really good idea as far as enticing players to stick around (I mean after all it does take SOME in-game effort to afford dropping 600+ million ISK every 30 days). I plan on making a long-term career as an EVE player, true I'm a noob but I have big dreams in this game, maybe even starting a corp. I want to be like my two favorite anime characters, Lelouch from Code Geass and Izaya Orihara from DRRR!; a Chessmaster and/or Magnificent Bastard who fights with their mind, is always a step ahead of the opposition, has their hand in everyone's dirty laundry, and manipulates people like so many little chess pieces Twisted

But back to the topic at hand, I want to be able to use the most common methods of communication, so if TS is what everyone uses then I'll go with that too, regardless of price. A little RL financial investment won't go amiss as far as my plans to dominate this fantasy galaxy.Twisted

I believe that's just required for Voice through the website. In game you just need to set your input and output via the game settings and join your chat channel's voice channel. Click the little gear icon in the chat channel and select Join Audio. If anyone is talking you should be able to hear them.

Voice program clients like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, and Mumble can be downloaded and used free of charge by individual players.Your player corporation or guild is then usually charged a small monthly fee to to rent space on a server.

Typically, player corporations or guilds simply ask for donations to pay for things like voice server fees, and a few generous souls foot the bill for everyone else.

Ok thanks. I guess I'll DL teamspeak and then hop in-game. Which by the way, is there a player profile thingy I can update here on the forums for anyone who wishes to see (corp recruiters, et cetera)? I'd like to have my usual playtimes displayed. Also, what time zone does EVE use for in-game time? I figure it's either GMT or Iceland (CCP's HQ), would make sense since it's about 6 hours ahead of me here in MDT (Mountain Time + Daylight Savings Time)

Iceland time is gmt...so yes...that one. You can post all that stuff into your signature if you wish but most of us use that space for either bragging or complaining. Lol. Perusing the corp recruitment section is absolutely suggested. It's better than the in game choice but even corp recruitment is wrought with scams in new eden so read the stickies at the top of that section before you dive in. Welcome to eve

Thank you. Here's to my future as a capsuleer. *raises glass*

That said, I'll be in-game in about 10 minutes or so after I get teamspeak installed and running. See you guys in space.

PS: One more question, if I'm running EVE fullscreen should I get an overlay addon for TS? And also, seeing as I forgot the obvious, but... once I get on Teamspeak, which server should I use? Is there a general one for EVE players, or only for corporations & alliances?

The top right 5 buttons are right clickable, their only context option is Join of Leave channel. You can add voice to other chat panels by clicking on the cogwheel at the top of the panel, then click Join Audio. It's all embedded in the game and you don't have to install anything. We often use Eve Voice with new recruits or people that haven't setup TS yet. Once we form an Alliance fleet people hop on TS, while certain people will keep their Eve channels open, using the same talk key for both applications.

In RvB we use EVE voice all the time. It has several advantages over external comms (simple to use, easier to herd the cats, included with EVE no downloading or configuring) but disadvantages too (have to be in game on that character, some people have issues, PTT is not very reliable).

To use it, click the settings button in any private channel, corp, alliance, etc. Click "join audio", you should get a blue or red icon next to the channel name and a speech bubble next to your name. If the icon is blue then go to settings again and "make speaking channel", it should turn red. Then convince other people to do the same, and off you go. Anyone else with the speech bubble will hear you.

If it's a fleet then the fleet boss needs to enable fleet voice before members can join. Then anyone joining the fleet will be asked if they want to join voice, or anyone that's already in fleet can join using the same method as above.

There isn't a general EVE Teamspeak server.

Each corp / alliance has their own voice comms (Teamspeak, Mumble, Ventrillo, Skype, EVE Voice) and each has their own server. Usually with registration on it too, to prevent anybody who shouldn't be on it to join / hear stuff etc.

I personally have all of the above stuff installed, though main comms so far has always been TS3.

EVE Voice works good for RvB. Mainly because people join in on the Fleet Audio.

However on for instance SOV alliances, you want everybody just to be on comms all the time (when logged in).
And the added benefit is that you can join it even when you don't play EVE / EVE isn't running / During downtime.

Each voice comms software program has it's own advantages and disadvantages compared to the others.

Also, if you do not want to to spend real life money on TS3. Individuals rent out entire servers or partial servers for isk.

E.G. I rent partial servers for isk in which i am logged in nearly 24/7 to provide support/answer questions edit permissions. I started eve in college as well, so i feel your pain money wise. If your account is brand new, and you really do plan on sticking around at least 6 months. I would recommend doing a longer than 1 month subscription so as to say about a dollar on each plex. That might seem like little, but 6 bucks saved meant i had another 3-4 meals from taco bell.

As it is VERY time consuming to earn 550 million your first 21 days. It is possible, but very time consuming. Only to have to do it the next month.

1.) Voice comms clients are free. It's the servers that people rent to run their voice comms from that cost money. Usually these things are paid in EVE with corp ISK or some of the corp leaders (usually the CEO) just pays it from his own money.

2.) Don't fall for the "I must PLEX my account" trap. You, specially as a new player, will fall into the circle of grinding ISK, buying a PLEX in game, adding game time, grinding ISK, buying a PLEX in game.....

Play EVE in a way you have fun. That's the only correct way.

And if the subscription is holding you back, might want to look into a part time job next to your college.

A PLEX costs about €15 / 25 (depending if you buy GTC or directly from CCP etc). That is about 1 hour of work for me in real life.

In that hour I couldn't by far grind enough ISK to buy a PLEX (approx. 500 mil ISK). So it would be quicker and easier to fund it by doing a part time job in real life.

Yeah, figured as much. However, I do have a question about PLEX, I heard people can resell it so is it basically like a voucher for an extension? Like, you buy it but you don't have to use it right away?

If so, then I figure I may go ahead with a 6 month subscription and then gradually stockpile PLEX so that way I'll have them when I need them.

Also, is PLEX account-based or character-based? Like, if you buy PLEX with 1 char and use it, does the extension apply to alts as well?

Sorry I know I have a lot of noob questions but this game is seriously interesting from what I've learned so far, I want to learn everything I can about it since I plan to be in it for the long haul.

PLEX can be redeemed as in game items and thus can stay in your possession as long as you want (just keep them safe in your hangar and don't undock with them in your ship).

Also, subscription is account based. As PLEX is a way to pay for your sub it means it's based on your account.

Very basically a PLEX means you let someone else pay for your account with his RL money:

1.) Someone is RL rich and wants a financial boost in the game. He buys a PLEX with his RL money and puts that PLEX up for sale on the market.

2.) You are RL "Poor" and space rich. You need game time so you buy the PLEX that the RL rich guy offered up for sale from the market and use it to extend your game time.

So basically. That other person paid his RL money to add gametime to your account. You paid him to do that by giving him ISK.

Ok, so another question regarding EVE Voice. Basically, try as I might I can't seem to connect to any of the audio channels. Basically, I can get EVE Voice working with my laptop's internal mic, I can transmit on my end in-game, and the echo test works, but I can't seem to enable audio on any of the in-game chat channels. Even with EVE Voice enabled, I don't see any option on the chat window to enable audio for a channel, nor do I see the speaker symbol that people say appears by the channel name. In other words I can't enable EVE Voice for a channel because the options to do so don't appear on the interface.

I think it may be a client issue even though I don't particularly know what said issue may be. The only thing I can think of is that I installed the client through Steam. Which leads me to my next question. If I were to download the free client software from CCP, uninstall my current Steam-based client, and install that one instead, would I still be able to play on my account, and would I still have the 30-days of subscriber time that came with the Steam client download?

EDIT: Nevermind. I guess most of the public channels don't have voice, I tried logging into a recruitment channel for a certain corp and it worked there.
