For ransoming its best to set up a channel with a nice welcome message. Something to the tune of "Shut down all your mods and meet my demands" kinda thing. Your victim will inevitably be Russian and not understand any of it but its a little more professional.

I'm very glad many of you find my diary here as fun to read as I find it is to write.

As to keeping a blog, I'm sad to say that's just not something I can do right now. I mentioned I'm my own boss and work from home. While I might make that sound like it's all sexy stalker clowns and pantless afternoons, it's proven to be more work--and far more draining at times--than any job I've had working for someone else.

If I were to start an "official" blog on some other site, I'd feel a need to keep it going. I'd feel responsible for it, and to it. In other words, it would feel like work and I do quite enough of that already. Keeping my little chronicle here, in a forum thread, feels just casual enough that every post is still fun. Playing EVE and writing about it here gives me exactly the sort of break I need.

And while I have every intention of keeping the stories coming so long as I continue to have adventures I think are worth writing about, I also feel like I have the freedom to let this thread slip quietly away one day.

This sounds like a great idea. Thank you!

Now to figure out how to make that work and train my fingers to reliably invite people into it in the heat of battle. Honestly, people just don't appreciate how much work this piracy thing is.

Well you've made me reactivate my pewpew account.

Only has 2 mil SP on it, and you've seen way more action that myself!

So far I've tried scramming a badger and an ibis to find that the new targeting colours are awesome, when it's not and I'm trying to target with the Safety on :D

Eventually got my targeting working...under a jump gate. Guns don't like frigates :)

Looking forward to more updates

Glad to hear it! You definitely don't need millions of SP to PvP. So far, I think developing a personal relationship with your on-board scanner--just use protection, surge suppressors are cheap--learning to pick your battles and scouting the terrain are much more important.

Even more critical? Accepting that the first few times you pew pew, you're going to spaz out and do everything wrong. Once you get past those initial WTF encounters, you'll start to mellow and not be a complete spaz.

The safety is like the one dude you knew in high school who had a car and could pass for 21. You didn't really like him, his body oder smelled like cabbage water, and instead of a full beard, he'd have these wierd patches in seemingly random spots on his face. He wasn't cool, would never really be your friend, but has his uses.

Of course, once you can drive and buy your own beer, you kick that freak to the curb and sleep with his sister, 'cause not only is she mostly normal, she's smoking hot if you can get over that whole lazy eye thing.

Today's post is brought to you by the letter "U" and the numeral "2". Also, free hugs to anyone who remembers Negativeland. And by "hugs" I mean "incredulity on my part," because Wikipedia is a thing that exists and has made trivia obsolete.

If you do honestly remember them though, you can give yourself a hug. A nice, long, tight hug. It feels good, just don't do it where anyone can see you.

Days 25 & 26

I haven't done a lot of pew-pewing during these last two days. The real world's been too needy for me to have much of a chance to fly among the stars. There's also the matter of my sec status which is slowly sinking like a union boss in a Jersey swamp. I'm still able to travel freely in high sec, but I figure I'm one pod kill away from being locked out of 1.0 systems.

Which makes this as good a time as any to migrate to low permanently.

However, visiting the markets in low sec is a disconcerting experience. It's just so surreal, if you've never lived more than a jump or two away from a major hub. It's like going to a weird combination of a Big Lots and an army surplus store. You might find a pair of shoes you like, but the only sizes they have are three and fourteen wide--though there's a thousand pairs of each, so if you're an Elf or a Sasquatch, you're covered for life.

"Oh look, I can buy Rifters here. Now, let's see, guns? Hmm…I see lasers. Oh! Projectile weapons, here we go. Wait, there's only four small guns and they're all different?"

I've started to imagine myself as a survivor of some kind of global catastrophe, scouring the land for stores which haven't been completely looted, while avoiding all the roving gangs of people. Sure, they might not mean me harm, but no one looks friendly when they're wearing peekaboo leather chaps and a hockey mask. Or flying a Loki.

There's also the matter of the generosity some of you have been possessed by. I mentioned before that a very nice fellow donated 60 Rifters to my cause a while back. Well, just the other day another player gifted me 20 Thrashers. This is awesome, of course, but it does leave me in a hilarious sort of pickle. I have nice things scattered all over the cluster, and soon all I'll be able to do is look fondly at them in my Assets window.

So I'll be buying a second account next week and training a hauler alt.

I'm pretty sure there's a joke to be made here about CCP, drug pushers, "The first hit is free," and maybe even a poignant tale of obsession worthy of a Céline Sciamma film, but it's too early for me to be good enough at the words into sentences putting to make it work.

In other news, I had a fantastic fight with Crake Gaterau yesterday--some hot Rifter on Rifter action which was easily the most fun I've had yet. I lost, but it was close, and we chewed the rag for a while after. He's a nice guy, gave me some good advice, and once again proved that a great way to lose less often is to talk with the people who beat you.

Supply can be a challenge. I have a no skill alt sitting in Jita 4-4 with all my money. He fills my orders and then ships my crap via Black Frog. Black Frog provides a great service at a price, however you're paying for their reputation more than anything. I once screwed up a contract creating a tempting situation for the pilot to pocket my stuff but they didn't and my things arrived safely.

An alt with a cloaky transport is also good to have in your pocket for moving a few ships at a time and restocking basic modules, etc. Its also not a bad idea to get said alt into a covert ops ship with probes for raising a little hell. Twisted

Look, Ma! I'm in a corporation! So far, so good. I'd like to write more about all the wonderful and hilarious adventures I'm having with them, but...

The First 30 Days: A Postmortem

Real life is the single greatest threat to the pirate. Forget CONCORD, forget the traps, and forget sexy stalker clowns. (Man, that chick had issues!) Real life hit me with a wrecking shot this weekend, but I'll spare you the details. This ride's supposed to be fun, after all.

So I'll just tell you a gorgeous and brilliant woman showed up at my door with a bottle of tequila, two large pizzas, and said "Hey, I just downloaded every Friday the 13th movie ever made and I have no one to watch them with. Do you want to? I'll hold you during the scary parts."

And I was all like "Oh, I'd love to, but I'm all sweaty from bench pressing 250 all day." And she was all "That's okay, we can take a bath before the film fest. Let me just get my Star Wars rubber ducky collection first."

Anyway, my pirating fun should be resuming in another day or two. In the meantime I'm just chilling out, working my mining wench semi-afk while sorting out all the lubricants, rubber chickens, and wondering how many yaks I really need staffing the bathroom. (Someone needs to guard the plunger in this house, and yaks are cheap. Don't ask.)

I'm also reflecting on my first month as a low sec pirate. It's been a strange trip, both harder and easier than I thought. Also? Way more fun than I'd expected, and my expectations were pretty high. So with that said, below you'll find the first six things that come to mind as being the most important lessons I've learned so far.

1. Have fun.

I hear some people say EVE is hard work. Then I wonder how a game can be work. Then my brain goes all spiraling into a typhoon of Zen and I need a cigarette. So taking a game too seriously increases your risk of cancer. That's what we call Science, right there.

2. Do not think for at least your first five fights.

Let's face it, your first few times out, you won't be thinking during the fights anyway. When you first start out, it's not about winning or losing, it's about getting over the WTF spaz attack that grips everyone the first few times they PvP.

Grab a T1 frig or dessie, find a hand-me-down PvP fit, hop into the nearest low sec system, and jump the first ship you find in a belt or in a plex--no matter what that ship is. Just get out there and do it. Five fights. After that, then you can think about things like target selection and tactics.

3. Always throw a "gf" in local--especially when you lose.

And when you lose, toss your opponent an EVE Mail, thank them for the fun, and ask them if they have any tips. You might be surprised by how friendly "pirate scum" can be.

4. Learn to use your on-board scanner.

It's your constant partner, and will always have your back if you treat it well. Beverly and I do wonderful and terrible things to each other in the night. That's trust, my friend. True trust. And maybe something I need to discuss with my therapist. Stop judging me!

5. Make friends.

This is a multi-player game. Sure, you can have a blast going solo, but games--at least for me--are almost universally better played with others. Also, there are a lot of old timey players here. You can learn from them if you slap down your jerking ego long enough to be polite.

6. Have fun.

Yep, last lesson's same as the first, but it bears repeating. Especially at the end of any "list of lessons" like this. Because, at the end of the day, if you're having fun, you're doing it right.

That's what I got so far. Well, that and try to remember to buy ammo before you get eight jumps from the hub. It's a real drag when you don't.

I just wanted to post and say that this thread has encouraged me to start a new account and character (Freddy here) in the interests of having a go.

Previously I have only done missioning/mining/manufacturing and have never engaged in PvP combat in any MMO ever :) Even when I play single player games that you have to choose to be good or bad (Mass Effect, Infamous, KOTOR) I only ever play the good guy so this really will be an adventure for me.

Fred is only a few days old at the time of writing with only 263,900 SP. I have another slightly older character with 6m SP which I might end up actually using if I enjoy it long term, or I might just keep Fred alive and have one more account to add to the collection.

The Open University of Celestial Hardship accepted my application and my training with them should start this coming week.

In the meantime, I'm going to start a nice list of jocular messages for when I have won and lost or when I wish to ransom in order to avoid your impersonal "1mill 30 secs", if I'm going to blow someone up, ransom them or let them blow me up, I want to give a smile if I can!

Maybe I'll see you out there Duke. Thanks for your diary.

I think you're absolutely right about giving your victims a smile in return for their involuntary generosity. I still need to work out that whole channel thing, and a list of hat lines.

Glad you like my diary. And toss me a "howdy" if you see me.

I think I may have liked about half your posts in this thread. Whoops. Anyways, if you're ever in the Genesis region, or have questions about anything at all EvE related, drop me a mail.

As far as ransom stuff goes, I believe it's the Tuskers who began the custom of ransoming really new guys for a joke or riddle, but one I've gladly adopted. As far as lines go "Your money or your life(pod)" is one of my favorites.
