excluding warfare activities (sov, FW, incursions) and broken game mechanics, should CCP focus on releasing new ship content with unique roles, or does eve need some new pvp mechanics for players to take advantage of in both large and small-scale combat?

I for one think we have more than enough ships in the game, and not enough sandbox-like tactics to complement them with. I'd like to see CCP develop new combat mechanics to expand on the 8 year old system, something like targetable ship subsystems, smarter orbits, fleet formations that offer some advantage over independent movement, smarter missiles: defender and FoF, smarter drones....there's so much to suggest

I'd rather keep the ships we already have but have all the tiers re-balanced so they're all viable alternatives.

Personally I'd like practice grounds like arenas (where you still lose your ship) to be able to jump into action a bit easier. The tedium of finding a good fight is really underwhelming in EVE, we don't have all have seas of spare time. It will not only boost the economy but also give more casual players a way to learn and a bit more self-confidence to engage in PvP.

Been on about an Arena System for a long time.

A Tier Re-balance would be heaven:

T1 Logi's that are actually good.
Cruisers meeting the standard set up by the Rupture, Arby and Vexor.
Ferox's, Prophs, Brutix's and Cyclones taking the heat of the big 4 BC's
T1 Interceptors flown as something besides shuttles with a bigger cargo hold.
Battleships in line with each other.

Ships of the same class based on roles not ranks.

Cool you can go hang out there after they add Arena's. Don't forget a long Whine Post about how this game is now World of Warcraft in Space followed by a fake rage quit.

So I am thinking Scimitar, Hugiin, Nighthawk, Nighthawk, Torp Raven for the 5v5 but a Minmatar Commandship Rush Team does not sound bad ether.

Perhaps a Sentry Nuet Domi Blob running Damps, I really don't know yet.

I think Arena games would be a spiffy idea. There's lore precedent for it in one of the Epic arcs (where you have to do a combat "show" for spectators). It would also introduce some new kind of ranking system for achievers to get their teeth into.

Every day on the forums there are people who complain about the lack of good solo PvP and how rare it is. EVE isn't geared towards the "knightly" style of honourable combat, it's geared towards a more "realistic" thing of "biggest gang wins".

But surely"knightly" combat is still a lot of fun, and a good challenge? (PvP, PvPP, or even PvPPP, or PPPPvPPPP like in the tournaments)

I guess a worry might be that people would desert the open world PvP? But I doubt that, I think this sort of thing would appeal to a sizeable minority, and might take them out of the larger PvP world, but on the other hand, it's quite normal for MMOs to try to cater to minority tastes if they can, everyone's money is as good as everyone else's.

It's a yearly tournament for the alliances -- i.e. fun for all.

If you put "Arena" fights into the game, it would likely detract from PvP in general, in that players would be more willing to go to the "arena" than to go slug it out in low/null (in some instances, current low/null pilots likely excepted). so, less non-sov fights...

Now, this isn't to say that a PLAYER-DRIVEN arena tournament would be a bad thing (say in the winter, about 6 mos after the AT) -- but it has to wholly be done by the players. No CCP-generated "Arena Space", no CCP-generated prizes, no CONCORD-less hisec, not one thing from CCP for this. It's not impossible, it just takes some logistics, and getting people to NOT shoot at one another long enough to allow the stuff to get where it needs to go...


Alternatively, work inside of your corporation/alliance to get a tournament of some sort started...

off the top of my head if you want to counter the blob why not make stacking penitlies for attacking and RR?

that way its more then just shoot primary and so on its more tacktics to maximise your damage potential...

like two armies attack each other you dont have 500 tanks shooting just one tank you end up with a glory field of smaller combat and almost 1v1 on a massive level

perhaps not something to make it a permanent arena system/area/whatever ... but yeah, maybe something to make it easier for players to organise/promote/etc.

I just want CCP to flesh out its current content.
Making it so that 1/2 the ships in the game aren't underpowered as others have mentioned would be a good start.

Also:

Fix FW
Expand on the T3 platform
Expand on wormhole content
Expand on Incursion content
Add something unique to lowsec that will give players a reason to go there
Fix the Bounty System
ect...

So I guess my answer to the original question is... no?

New mechanics can cause new ships to find roles.
