What I find really amusing is their decision to not have an offline mode, yet all it took was a game mod to open up the possibility of just such a thing. The only thing that Simcity actually needs an internet connection for is to save your game, and given the speed at which the always online requirement was bypassed it won't be long before some clever sod gets round that restriction to.

The Simcity release is probably the biggest ballsup I've seen EA make yet, and given their past history it wouldn't surprise me to see the servers shut down by this time next year.

Edit- Just seen that they're threatening to ban people for having the gall to ask for a refund. That's damn poor customer service, if you ship something that's not fit for purpose, which Simcity wasn't on release date as evidenced by all the bits they patched out then they should give a refund to those that ask for it. It's no wonder they were voted worst company of 2012, it's just a shame that they have the IP rights for so many good franchises when they could be being developed by someone that actually gives a crap about providing a decent game experience over making an obscene profit

Well, EA stock is at its lowest value since roughly 2000 and trading has been largely anemic, meanwhile SimCity sells over a million copies. The high sales (large customer pool) are probably the reason for the SimCity media shitstorm, and the media shitstorm most likely contributed to the timing of the resignation, but Riccitiello couldn't have been feeling all that comfortable even ahead of the SimCity blunder.

It's all just really sad.

I have played SimCity since 1993 but I'm just not interested in participating in this farce at all, especially not giving them any money as encouragement.

Same, this is the first SimCity game I've refused to purchase. I regret buying BF3, the SP campaign has the stupid set pieces which are overly fiddly, the MP is not too bad, but Origin totally ruined it for me when it refused to allow me to connect 50% of the time.

EA seem to be suffering from the Anti-Midas touch, everything they touch turns into a steaming pile of excrement (/me looks at Mass Effect 3).

It's a decent start but the whole company needs a serious enema. They have taken a lot of good games and names and just ground them into the dirt for quick releases and instant cash with no follow up support.

Unfortunately that's what happens when you place people with no relevant experience in charge.

EA's making similar mistakes that Atari made during the consoles hey day in the 80s.
Saturated market, crap games .. plus questionable business practices. If the booming (and also getting saturated) indie scene isn't an indicator of gamer's taste for better games, then EA's walking blind.

P.S I wouldn't mind if EA die a painful death, infact, I'd be happy Big smile

It's the way of the world anymore.

Take Hollywood. Almost all decisions are in the hands of accountants who have never even had a film class or cinema studies.

Hopefully the industry learns from EA's mistakes. However I fear they won't

Ultimately, it's all about the Sacred Stockholders and that Bottom Line.

Oh dont tease me bro!

An IP sell off would be very interesting. I wonder if some studios could actually break away to independence.

As has been said though, EAs share value has been circling the toilet bowl as of late.

The one good thing i can say is that in the financial world the gamers are starting to make a presence. In 10-15 years the mid late 20s / early 30s group will have a bigger say on investments and knowledge.

Im not saying things will change, but they might if we are lucky.

Funny you should say that. I used the exact same words only last week, when vocalizing my utter disappointment with that particular game.

I've become extremely critical when it comes to buying games. I never pre-order. I never buy before reading/watching multiple reviews from various sources. And even then, I wait because first impressions may turn sour in the longer run.

The new Tomb Raider game actually looks decent. Maybe I'll check it out in person. Smile

That would make a hell of a Sims expansion.
