A bit creeped out by a single rogue drone.

Found a gravimetric site. Omber belt, nothing fancy, but Isogen is hard to come by in Ammatar space so I'm mining it anyway. After a while a single rogue drone shows up, a Silverfish Alvi. One drone. A scout?

I launch my own drones and leave them in a defensive orbit around my ship. No reason to jump the gun, this barge has enough defensive systems to totally ignore a dozen drones. Not worried.

But then nothing happened, and now I'm worried.

It had seriously been over thirty minutes since it had shown up and the rogue drone had done nothing but fly in an odd pattern between 15km and 25km from my barge. It obviously knew I was there. Yet it did not attack. It is just... sat there. Thinking. Watching. Waiting.

When I left it was still there. Figured if I had actually met New Eden's first ever non-hostile rogue drone then it would be a really asinine move to destroy it. Now I'm wondering what to do next... try to talk to it? Offer to trade nuts & bolts?

Has anyone else ever had this happen? What should I do?

Do not mistake non-aggression for non-hostility.

The wise individual proceeds with caution. If you're going to attempt to communicate (which I recommend against, by the way), do so from a safe range with long range broadcasts.

Very sound advice. However, if it is a friendly, no telling how valuable that information/drone may be.

I'd follow the previous advice that was given and if you want to attempt contact, do so at your own risk.

I commend you for not killing the poor creature.

Maybe this can be a first step towards diplomacy with these magnificent but misunderstood creatures.

You should have destroyed it. Anyone who thinks that any sort of 'peace' with the Drone is on more Mindflood than a Snake tester.

It probably had a bug in it's targeting array.

Two options can have happened:

a)It considered your force overwhelming and has developed some sort of self-preservation that prevented it from attacking you until its allies came.

b)It was only flawed and bugged in its programming, which is consistent with flying in odd patterns, and its mind was "crazy", to use human terms.

Both things are solved by preventive destruction of the beast. If they had stopped being aggressive they would have said it, one way or another. They know of our tendency to shoot, so just waiting wouldn't work on the majority of pod pilots and, thus, would be a very bad tactic for a "first encounter".

If such a pacific encounter is even possible for them, which I doubt.

I don't know man. I've heard stories about rogue drones just watching people before, hell even sending out data bursts sometimes. Not ALL of them are vicious killers. Some of em just wanna exist and don't want trouble.

I even think I heard about someone finding a communicative Rogue Drone Mind somewhere out there....didn't want much but it talked. Didn't shoot. Just..talked.

I wouldn't discount a dialog with the Rogue Drones yet.

Whatchoo Talkin' 'bout, girl?

All communication bursts that I've heard been transmitted have been hostile in nature. If you'd care to show me some proof that some of them 'just wanna exist and don't want trouble' then I might change my opinion on them. The quiet ones are the ones you have to been most careful of, after all.

I'll look up the system for you and see what I can find.

P.S. I'm not a girl.

Ms Luftschreck;

I have had similar experiences. I understand how confusing it is.

If you would like help or advice I will be happy to provide. I would also like a copy of your flight recordings if possible, to help in my analysis of rogue drone behaviours. It may help in offering explanation for your case.

I'd like to interject in this for a second with a totally non-constructive piece of info.

I just laughed so hard I cried a little.

That is all.

Rogue drones don't stay in one piece long enough to creep me out.

It happened again! Different omber belt, but yes... another Silverfish Alvi, hovering 15-20km away and not doing anything. I'm staring at it right now, in fact.

Shocked

I think it's starting back.

Probably the same one.

Or its targeting systems went bonkers.

Or its threat-recognition programming wasn't working right.

Or its sensors were just dead.

Just playing the Deciever's Advocate here, there are a lot of technical reasons a single Rogue might fail to engage you on sight.

I don't think a single rouge drone is trying to make peaceful contact, it's probably broken, best to just ignore it, eventually it will run out of energy and deactivate. I don't think shooting it would be a good idea as that could cause a swarm to appear, though if you have the means of disposing a swarm, then put the pathetic thing out of it's misery.

I've tried "communicating" with these pest before and all I got as a reply was "Biological entity detected! Exterminate! EXTERMINATE!" in binary, followed by a salvo of lasers of course.

Rouge Drones were accidents of science. They aren't even living and their consciousnesses seems to be nothing more than an aggressive hive mind. If you can kill one, show no mercy.

If these abominations that have claimed so many lives want peace, they would make a better attempt than just one drone meeting up with a random miner in a fairly secluded asteroid field.

I've seen drones act in a similar manner once before, except it wasn't just one of them, it was an entire hive fleet. Dozens of them, just sat there, only a hundred clicks off my port bow, in full view of a Sisters of EVE deputation. But do you know what the creepiest part of it was? Sister Alitura, the woman in charge of the SoE taskforce not only wasn't frightened by this turn of events, she wasn't even surprised - she just told me "hold your fire. Do not aggress. Trust me on this one," like what we were seeing was the most natural thing in the world. Then, the moment I had finished my business with the SoE, they just warped out. All of them. Not a single shot fired, not a single targetting signature on any of the human ships. No communication, no violence, no action of any kind. They just sat there, watching us.

If a rogue drone can turn away from pointless war... maybe we can too.
