Some people might not know what game ArmA 3 is yet so let's start with a short quote from Wikipedia:
Quote:
ARMA 3 (stylized as ARMA III) is an upcoming open world tactical shooter video game being developed by Bohemia Interactive. It is expected to be released in Q3 2013.[2][3][4] ARMA 3's storyline takes place in the mid-2030s during the fictional Operation Magnitude, a military operation launched by NATO forces fighting in Europe against "Eastern armies" led by a resurgent Iran.

The game has now released Alpha for those that prepurchase from either Steam or their website and a trailer to go with it. Has anyone except me here purchased it and what are your thoughts?

I purchased it an hour ago and have so far only played through the part as an ordinary infantry. The game feels very polished performace-wise and I have yet to encounter any bugs. It's way to early to predict on how the game will be during the release but if the alpha is any indication it will blow me away (most likely literally. In-game).
The game is not for everyone however as the game is after all way harder than your standard FPS like Battlefield or CoD. Pirate

Edit about performance: Worth mentioning that I still encounter some stuttering at times but I believe it's due to the limitations of the harddrive than the GPU/CPU. ArmA 2 pretty much demanded to be installed on an SSD to run smoothly. Will install it on an SSD tomorrow and return with results.
It is also worth mentioning I run on Very High/Ultra on an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition, 670 GTX 2gb Windforce from Gigabyte, 6gb RAM.

The problem with the Arma franchise is that dayZ got them a few million bonus sales and the developers mistakenly thought people where playing Arma when all they where in fact doing was installing it so they could play dayZ.

They then took all the income from those sales and blew it on making more Arma games that will sell bugger all because the next iteration of DayZ will be its own game.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

I honestly don't think that that's the whole truth. While sure, a lot of the people that purchased ArmA for Day Z can't stand playing the original game, but I do think some people who tried ArmA after getting bored of Day Z enjoyed it. It's common knowledge that Day Z won't be on ArmA 3 and yet ArmA 3 is the nr.1 on Steam atm. But I guess it's too early to say.

I thought the standalone zombie game was going to be the new Arma 3

what will they do without the zombie mod? surely they don't think Arma 2 was successful enough on its own to do an Arma 3

Not true. ArmA 3 was announced before Day Z got released and made ArmA 2 bigger than it was originally. I think the only impact Day Z had on the development on ArmA 3 was that it provided even bigger budget, allowing them to delay the game and polish it more.
I believe ArmA 2 was successfull in its own right, just not as successfull as post-Day Z or other games such as CoD/BF s it's more advanced and sandboxy. You have to remember that it has a diehard fanbase since the good old Operation Flashpoint-days.

I like the arma games for what they are. Though an overlay is your friend here.

DayZ was fun and a great mp game with mates. But i am looking forwards to arma 3 because its just a really good simulator. Though im sure i will need to make another overlay.

You know what game is way better than DayZ? Wasteland, all PVP no zombies with the same sandbox. I got tired of all the zombies interfering with my PVP so I tried wasteland and found that the good servers would let you squad up and make your own military, and base!

Arma2 really shines in wasteland, and I really hope the wasteland mod get ported to Arma 3!

Yay ArmA 3, have been waiting for what seemed like an eternity for this.

I have never liked DayZ much but it seems like it's the best thing that has ever came to the franchise, it actually made the game quite well known and gave the devs some extra cash to develop ArmA 3.

I will add this to my milsim collection for sure.
