Buy Order Expiration question

I'm trying to figure out some "odd behavior", as a relatively newb to station trading. When I went to bed last night, I had a net value (isk + escrow +sell orders + hangar inventory) of nearly 18 billion. Today I get home from work and find that it is now 15.5 billion. I combed through the transaction logs and journal for any screw-ups on my part, and can't find any.

I don't believe I had any sell orders expire (certainly not 2.5 billion worth), but I did have a lot of buy orders expire. Now, I know when a buy order expires it still lives on the server, invisible to the browser - but is the isk in the "Total in Escrow" field misleading? For example, if I had 5 billion in escrow, and a buy order that had 1 billion in escrow expires, would I then see 4 billion in the "Total In Escrow" field until the next downtime (when the 1 billion would be returned to my isk balance)?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have Margin Trading, and if so, were you taking that into account when working out how much you had in escrow?

Yes I have Margin Trading 4. I was only counting the Total in Escrow that is listed, ignoring the "additional xxxxx isk to cover" since that isn't spent money at that point.

After a buy order expires, the ISK sits in escrow until after the next downtime. After downtime, the ISK will be back in your wallet.

But - is the isk in escrow from the expired order included in the Total In Escrow value on the Orders tab, or does it disappear from that value until it reappears in your wallet after downtime? If the latter, then it would possibly explain where my missing money is. :)
