Lost skill points but clone was fine

I was under the impression that having a clone which 'covers' the skill points you have protects those skill points in case you are podded. However, I was just podded, and had literally checked my clone 5 minutes before this happened, and the clone was fine. Yet it said i lost 7000-something skill points in industry after I died.

Do I have a misconception of how this works? Thanks.

You understand it correctly. Sounds like a bug or the SP number shown wasn't up-to-date, so you actually had trained over what the medical clone could hold.

Use a petition.

Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling.

I'm thinking this is likely.
It's something you see a lot of when you're training the long lvl 5 skills, the displayed amount can jump a couple of hundred thousand at times upon a skill completion. If it wasn't this causing the issue, then yes it sounds like a bug.

Was losing your clone preluded by losing a T3 cruiser? If so, this is where you lost your SP.

I believe you lose a skill related to the ship in question, usually a subsystem skill.

I didn't lose a T3 cruiser. It was a mining barge.

Either way, can you explain how losing a T3 cruiser causes the loss of SP, or am I understanding you correctly?

Losing a T3 causes the loss of one level of a single subsystem skill.

If you want to make sure exactly how many SP's you have - stop your current training skill and restart it.
This updates the displayed amount to show correctly.

When I try to file a petition, I keep getting an 'oops' notification telling me that something went wrong with the server. I've tried 10 times so far and keep getting the error. Anyone heard of this? Anyway around it?

If you pause the queue or switch skills for a second it'll update the SP.

File the petition in-game.

Use this link: https://support.eveonline.com/pages/petitions/createpetition.aspx

Or as DMC says, do it in game (press F12 and follow the info).

Also check how many sp you will get on the current skill Q and make sure your clone protects more than the sp you will get upon completing that skill. If it looks like your clone wont be enough then upgrade the clone asap.

Still file a petition just in case it was a bug you experienced. CCP should be able to check logs of timestamps of the skill you had in Q, the sp clone you had, and the time stamp of when you got podded.
