Missiles not hitting target while initiating warp

As mentioned in title, im sure more then one person noticed this, i tried searching for it on the forum but didn't find anything, call me newb but id like this clarified a bit.
Since we got new missiles every time i initiate warp my missiles still launch, though the target doesn't take any damage anymore.. why?

This has been the case as long as I remember. It's an intended feature. I'm not so sure about the reason why though. If I had to take a guess, I'd say it's something about the ability to do damage while not actually engaged anymore. Afterall if you want to keep doing damage, you can always just stay in combat and not engage your warp drive.
