A returning player's experience - Is there anything I can still fly?

Having been away from the EVE-verse for a while, I recently decided to reactivate my account and give the game another try. Just to give you an idea how long I've been out of my pod, when I last played, we capsuleers only existed from the shoulders up. A lot has changed in that time, and I've been doing my best to read up on what's different and basically re-learn the game.

I expected it to be difficult, dusting off my memory, and figuring out what was the same and what was not. However, there was one thing I did not expect to have nearly as much trouble with: getting out of a station. That proved to be a challenge in and of itself, which went a little something like this:

(keep in mind, I'm a Caldari pilot, focused mostly on smaller ships, and heavily invested in missile skills with very few points in guns)

Quote:
Well, I think I'll stretch my legs and take my Manticore out for a spin...

You can't undock in that.

What? Why not?

Stealth bombers don't use cruise missiles any more, you'll have to use torpedoes instead.

I see. But I maxed out my cruise missiles before, I've never needed torpedoes.

Sorry.

Oh well, maybe I'll go exploring in my Falcon then, that could be fun...

You can't undock in that either.

What's the problem this time?

You've got two launchers equipped, the Falcon only has one missile hardpoint now. You're going to have to use guns.

Seriously?!?! Fine, I guess I'm going to need to train some skills before I fly any of the T2 stuff again. I'll need some skill books, and I should probably build up my wallet anyway. I guess it's time to break out my trusty old Drake and run some missions. I can at least undock in that, right?

Well...

What? What is it now? Are you really not going to let me get out of here in a missilier's staple mission ship?

It's just, well, you'll have to take off one launcher first...

Ok, that's not so bad, I-

...and heavy missiles sort of got nerfed; so you'll really want to fit it with HAMs instead.

You have got to be kidding me! So I can't even do decent level missions in a ship I used to fly all the time until I put in more training time?

Pretty much.

*sigh* Well, it's back to a Kessie then, at least I think I still have the skills to fit that... *grumble grumble*

Of course this was heavily dramitized, and these weren't the only shps I had with issues, but you get the idea. Don't get me wrong, on the whole, I think a lot of the changes since I last played are an improvement. It's just incredibly frustrating to have a hangar full of ships that I used to be well qualified for and now I can't even fly most of them, and the ones that I can fly I won't really be effective in them without additional training. Thanks to the reactivation promotion, I just bought a three-month subscription, and now it looks like I'll spend the first two months of that just trying to get myself back to where I was before, which is frankly ridiculous.

I get that things needed to be changed and rebalanced, and that it's been a long time and I can't expect everything to stay the same. Some of the changes just don't make any sense to me. Why even bother removing just one missile hardpoint from the Falcon? If you're going to take one off, take them both; who is going to equip only one launcher and one turret together next to their cloak and probe? The dev blog announcing the ECM ship changes even indicated that the Falcon was supposed to engage at long range; to me it seems that missiles would better fit that role than guns, but what do I know? And as for stealth bombers, would it have hurt anything to give them the option to fit torps and cruise missiles? It seems to me that that would have opened up choices and variety. To me that's what makes a sandbox game interesting, the ability to do things your own way instead of being identical to everyone else. As far as I'm concerned, more choice is a good thing. When you have an opportunity to add more choice, why take it away instead? Isn't removing options the wrong direction for a game like EVE?

I know, at this point, I'm just rambling. I'm really not sure what the point of this little rant is; catharsis, I suppose. I don't really expect anything to be done about it at this point. At the very least, maybe some of you reading this will get some minor amusement from it. At any rate, I'm not giving up just yet (I'm paid up for three months anyway now, right?), so don't bother asking for stuff. I just feel like I'm practically starting over from scratch, and I've got a long way to go. I guess that means I'd better get started.

Fly safe, and watch your six!

Why a switch on/off? Because the new animation doesn't add anything to gameplay and it's graphically annoying. In other words, it's worse than bad: it's useless. Simple as that.     _ - Kina Ayami_

This is why I abandoned the idea of training to fly specific ships a long time ago, and instead trained one race and weapon system at a time.

Of course. You can fly everything you could fly before, and use all the equipment you could use…

…you just have to update the mixes of the two to match the current ship designs.

Ths is NOT directed at the OP, however, I have noticed a similar issue in NULL SEC:

PILOT 1: "Hey guys, how's it going? Haven't logged on in 8 months. Anything new?"

PILOT 2: "Uhhh... yeah. We no longer live in Delve. Did FW for a bit and scored some serious ISKies. Went to the North and got some great fights. Now we are in the South establishing SOV."

PILOT 1: "What the ****!! All my stuff is in C3N!"

PILOT 2: "Good luck with that."

Man, I know those feels. I still have stuff stuck in C3N. And we left that in...2010? Yeah.

"At the very least, maybe some of you reading this will get some minor amusement from it."

No worries, I honestly did. Just like I did because of our Nullsec friend above me.

To stay a bit on topic, the rebalancing changes are all in all pretty awesome. Sure, some of them were controversial and if you have to inform yourself about all of them at once, instead of gradually like the people could that were playing during that time, it can be a bit too much. In the end you will come to the conclusion that its worth it.

If you like to PvP with guns I recommend you try out the rebalanced frigates, destroyers and cruisers. At the time when you stopped playing a lot of them were so bad that they were basically useless. They are now all viable. And still cheap. And a lot of fun. Seriously, get them :)

Why just one?

Oh... at a time.

Lol, yeah, I had a feeling I might be out for a while when I quit before, so at least I moved my stuff out of null and into highsec before I left.

Just remember CCP's long standing motto when it comes to patches:

"If you could fly it before, you won't want to when we're done with it."
