Missions don't spawn within 4 AU of a celestial on any kind of consistent basis. I regularly use missions to create bookmarks out of d-scan range of any celestial.

That just means one or two more scans to narrow your hidey hole down to somewhere inside an 8AU sphere. That's an extra 10-15 seconds depending on mouse handling skills.

When my mission is 19 AU's from anything, I'm feeling pretty safe from your probes. I hit d-scan regular-like and combat probes don't even come close when I get a mission out that far.

Mate, if it takes you 30 seconds to probe someone out with probes then you need practice.
A good scanner will lock you down in 1 scan, so 5 seconds or so.

(Not including setup obviously.)

30 seconds = basically two scans if you include the time to launch / position the probes. Perhaps three scans if you already have probes in space.

So if you are near a celestial and in something that has a mid to large signature radius then you are going to be 100% at perhaps 4 or 2 AU probe size, meaning you will easily be found in 2-3 scans.

However, if you are in a very small ship and/or not near to a celestial then it's going to be a lot harder to get you in 2-3 scans.

The other thing that will make scan time faster is that if you are near a celestial then they can narrow in on you using the DSCAN either themselves or with a buddy. All this can be done multiple times to triangulate you in a covops before you even need probes in the water. Clever use of DSCAN may mean only one probe scan is required to get you 100%.

In summary if you're asking the question "Do I need to mash DSCAN every 30 seconds to see if I'm being probed" then the answer is HELL YES!

Likewise it takes me only 5 seconds to complete a courier mission, if I exclude the travel time.

I keep seeing this in various places that a "good" SP pilot with combat probes can find you in 30 seconds, at the same time, it seems to mean that they can only find you in 30 seconds when you are at a celestial, and not in opens space, and in open space it will take a lot longer.

Yeah, you keep thinking that. There's zero difference between open space or being at a celestial. If you see probes on you, run.

a good scanner will have his probes visible on your d-scanner for less than 10 seconds.

what he's doing in the time before that is mostly irrelevant, unless a neutral in local is making you dock up.

Nah. We're just verifying your location to avoid any misunderstandings about who's mining which asteroid. You really can just go about your business.

Oh, of course. And that cloaky Proteus that just landed in my Sleepers Anom? He's just being neighborly.*

It's not w-space if you're not in fleet with guys you ganked a week ago. Or an hour ago, in one particular instance. Also blue-on-blue on wh action is where it's at, yo.
