A new capsuleer's experience

Hello everyone. I'm about 3 weeks into the game and starting to figure some things out (both in game and the meta-politics stuff), so i figured now would be a good time to recount my experience, get some questions answered, and vent a little. I saw some pics online of the Battle of Asakai and my fiancee and I decided to give Eve a try. Another couple had seen some adverts and were looking for a new game to play, so we four decided to try Eve out. It very much appealed (appeals) to my style of playing games, so I made sure to read up as much as possible about the game, but everyone else was totally fresh.

So we roll our characters, and right off the bat we notice: the User Interface is not at all intuitive. Windows cover over 50% of the space on the screen. Giant letters covered every system we tried to click in the map, we couldn't move probes because we couldn't find the solar system map and once we did, we couldn't move the probes because we kept clicking on the stupid planet instead. The automatic sizing of the windows cuts out vital information (why the *** won't it let me warp to this cosmic signature?) Every time we conquered one of these UI-realted problems, more would pop up, and there is almost no information about the game IN the game. Hell, even the official Wiki is either wrong or missing information half the time (they call the Navitas a mining ship and have it's stats totally wrong). So cut to day three and frustrations are pretty high.

We log on and run some of the career tutorials out of Trossere. After a while, we decide to take a break and see if we can make some money, and quickly find out that massive scordite is the best selling item we are able to obtain. We can't find any in Trossere, what with all the other newbies, so we head through a jump gate. Not twenty seconds after arriving in the system, some guy from some corp (New World Order or something like that?) says that he and his corp are going to charge us 10 mil ISK per day to mine there. Now, having read up on Eve I was prepared for something like this and promptly told him to **** off and that I knew CONCORD would get him. He responds that he's flying a 3 mil suicide something or other and that there's no way we can stop him.

At this point, two of my friends said "Well this is stupid", logged off, and will not pick the game back up.

Why not just have a single button that the player presses after character creation that spawns them in a circle of aged, sour-faced veterans who promptly blow them up, followed by the game automatically uninstalling to save the rookie some time? That way a core group of players who have been playing since 2005 can get their sociopathic tendencies off and save us new players some time.

When I started reading you post I was forumulating a response along the lines of:

Yeah, EVE online is still a computer game from the early 2000's. It still things right click to interface with main functionality is a good thing. The whole UI could use a real overhaul.

But about the part of New Order. I have never run into New Order in the past several months of their operations. I don't know if I am good about finding quiet systems but I think its not that hard to move elsewhere.

I know New Order doesn't operate in the Mili system. Maybe try going there.

You're missing the point - two weeks in and the experience would have been a fun, player created challege that would have made the game enjoyable. But when you're trying to figure out how to lock onto multiple targets and fly your ship?

So are you whining about Eve being difficult or suicide banking? Either way the response would be HTFU or GTFO.

What do you mean we? I prefer to have high subscription numbers so CCP doesnt' have to lay off its developers and therfore inducing the stagnation of the game.

There's no point in complaining about this. The hardcore players like that it isn't popular. It makes them feel special and unique when in reality, they aren't. They sit in their little null-sec havens, scraping up imaginary currency, and call themselves awesome because they have played a game way too long.

EVE has the most horrible community of any MMO. You're better off going to the wiki rather than coming here for anything more than, "lol can i haz ur stuff? xD xD"

I'd rather not EvE go the way of Warhammer Online. You need fresh blood to keep an MMO alive. You cannot simply rely on current subscibers to keep you afloat indefinatley. Eventually even the most loyal vetern will quit. This is why new subscriptions are important.

Unless you enjoy playing with yourself.

And EVE retains and gains the types of players that are suited to the game. Being in constant development with free expansions and near constant account growth for a decade shows that this game is not going to the way of Warhammer Online.

I too would much prefer that players not suited to the game who will only moan and change EVE to stay the @#!! out of EVE. To those that love the game and enjoy it for what it is - welcome them with open arms*.

Karrin Rawlter,

Welcome to Eve.

Despite all the negative replies from the wanna be leet forum posers, I encourage you and your friends not to give up so easily. Right at first this game is overwhelming but it get's much easier as you become familiar with the most important aspect of this game:

- Settings -

Each and every UI window has a setting option. They can be sized and pinned to stay any way you want. The map also has settings to remove the names. In fact, every aspect of this game has settings. There's also settings available in the Esc menu.

One other thing to remember, this sub-forum section is the cesspool of Eve Forums. The best place for new players to learn and have questions answered is in the sub-forum EVE New Citizens Q&A

Good luck to you and definitely don't let anyone bully you. This 'New Order' is nothing to worry about. If they waste a 3 mill ship to gank a rookie ship in high security, then they're even dumber than I thought. If they continue to harass you, file a petition in-game about them. One thing CCP doesn't like is new players getting messed with by older more experienced players.

By the way, high security belongs to Non Player Characters (NPC's), otherwise known as Empire Factions. Not some group of losers who think they're leet due to preying on inexperienced new players.

Here's an alternative idea. Why not HTFU and not rage quit over losing a cheapo, disposable ship that you got for free from the tutorial? I haven't played console games and/or WoW for a long time, but I assume they do still let you die? Players die in videogames. Get over it. I'm sitting in Youl running lv2's while I train up enough to go back to 0.0. If you see James again can you send him my way? I'll equip a mining laser just for him. I could use something to break up the monotony and getting pseudo-ransomed might make me less home sick.

I don't want to be one of those out of touch old people that just doesn't understand the next generation. I used to really hate those guys. On the other hand you sissy, Beiber listening, Twilight watching, dyke haircut getting momma's boys just had the most exciting thing of your MMO lives happen to you and all you can do is cry about it like the 12 year old girls you look like. Running into James is about the least harsh thing that can happen to you in Eve. If you can't even deal with that then what are you even doing here to begin with?

DeMichael Crimson wrote:

I'm encouraging the same thing. I'm just not doing it with a level of respect that he hasn't earned and doesn't deserve. If he makes some sort of attempt to deal with the problem instead of ragequitting at the first sign of a minor inconvenience I'll welcome him with open arms. I'm actually quite polite and helpful to people who don't give me a reason not to be.

Ever seen WoW's barrens chat? If I was a WoW player I'd have called you three different racial slurs in all caps l33t speak and made a rude comment about your mother's sex life and my role in it. Oh and my name would be xXLaGoLaZXx or something.

Your entire post stinks of butthurt over something or other, so I'm inclined to just ignore it as the trash it is, but this statement is just incredible.

The EVE community is bad? Then I take it you never used EVEMon? Any of the fitting tools? Any of the trade tools? Read any of the innumerable guides on the forums? Used EVE-Search? Read any of the blogs that provide news coverage over the entire cluster? Asked an intelligent question in the appropriate forum (I bet not)? Been to fanfest? Heard of EVE-Uni? Etc, etc.

EVE's community is as good as they come. That the verbal exchanges between players tend to be a bit robust is merely the product of this being a (relatively) hardcore competitive game which the players actually care about. If you don't like it, HTFU or GTFO.

I don't think the massive amount of bile and filth some of the player base produce have anything in common with the stuff you mention.

I mean GD isn't the shinning example of kindness and openess.

When you say HTFU and GTFO you aren't being helpful or encouraging for example.

You are just proving the person's point you are replying too.
