Got this via reddit and I'm surprised it hasn't been posted yet. Article is dated 13/2/2013

Real lessons from virtual worlds.

On April 27, the solar system Jita was destroyed by a fleet of ships that fired on anything attempting to travel through the region. All traffic in the solar system, a major trading area for minerals and other materials, had been brought to a halt. This was not the start of a science-fiction film but the actions of gamers within Eve Online, a game in which players can take part in mining, manufacturing, trading and even piracy.
CCP, the Icelandic company behind the game, allowed the destruction to happen. “They are really driving the economic engine of Eve Online because all these ships had to be built from harvested resources,” explains Eyjólfur Gudmundsson, the gaming company’s lead economist. “War is consumption in Eve Online .”

Burn Jita is old news to us but for to make it into an economics article on FT.com is astounding.

http://pastebin.com/K2Rcj6Z7 because FT.com has a bloody paywall

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Couldn't read, don't have a subscription to ft.

Never the less, it might be a game but there are very sound economic principles that take place everyday in eve online.

Pretending to be an orc or elf is a completely irrational economic decision. EVE is the only MMO worth playing.

A professional astro-bastard was not available so they sent me.

Heh. and you'll honestly be able to say you're reading the FT, much to the shock of your cow-orkers.

BTW: The 'free subscription' option will let you access the article - pretty painless registration.
