I think the more interesting question is: "What did he do to you, Scar?"

Expecting some drama to follow.

Could you explain the easy part?

You should re-title this thread:

How I lost 1.1bil by not understanding how bounties work.

So what is it exactly that I don't understand?

You get 20% of the value of their loss in bounty.

For example.

If I have a bounty of 500,000,000

and I am flying a ship, and you blow me up, and 1,000,000 worth of stuff was blown up in my ship.

You get 200,000 in bounty payout.

My bounty is now at 499,800,000

yes

Yep, I already understood that but, thanks for the explanation. Smile

The point is that the drops from suicide ganking someone have a standard deviation of value that is usually 100-200%+ more than 20% of the kill value. A bounty will almost never make a gank go from negative to positive expected value. You're much better off paying a merc to kill them, than to put a bounty on them.

The hull cost of a ship plus what was exploded (modules/rigs/cargo) effect the bounty payout.

You get 20% of the total worth of everything that was destroyed.

Ship 100m
Mods 100m
Total 200m
His bounty is 20m
Explode his vessel
You get 20m

Had his bounty been 40m you would have gotten 40m.

To score a 1b bounty you would need to kill him in a 5b ship.

Signatures wer cooler when we couldn't remove them completely.

Or... The person gets smacked repeatedly until the bounty is back to 0

not really...in high sec you have to suicide and take those losses. so:

Ship 100m (battleship?)
Mods 100m (tech II crap for drops)
Total 200m
His bounty is 20m
Explode his vessel (with upwards of 500mil in gank ships?)
You get 20m (and loose your shirt in the process)

If he is in a 5+ billon dollar loot pinata then he's a good target for a gank without the bounty but at least your money will be a cherry on top?

If he's a miner or something then maybe you can milk him dry but you really did waste over a billion on that bounty. That amount of money could have bought some fancy mercs to actually do the job right.

My bounty prevents me from playing EVE. It is a griefing mechanic and should be changed for those of us with positive sec status.

+1

Bounties should create a triggerable kill-right for each 1b bounty IF the player ALSO has a negative security status. :)

i.e.
Player A has a 1.5b bounty AND a sec status of -0.8: Anyone can trigger a kill right in hisec on him. If he grinds sec status above 0, the kill right cannot be activated until it falls below 0 again.

Make this even more compelling by having a 'Bounty Hunting Skill', that for each level trained reduces the threshold in which the killright can be triggered. i.e. If I have Bounty Hunting 5, I can trigger the killright at 100m, not 1b :)

Done; bounty hunting made into an actual EVE profession, in a way that ties into existing 'being a criminal has consequences' mechanic...who knew...
