New Way to Game

Not sure where to put this but I was wondering if you guys at CCP were looking into the Oculus Rift, a new and innovative way to game that allows the user to delve into the gaming experience in a much better way then your normal monitor/television.

"Here's the skinny on the Oculus Rift: it's a headset that covers your eyes with a 720p screen. There are two lenses in front of your eyes, and the screen shows a left and right stereo image that the lenses pipe through to your eyeballs, creating an immersive 3D virtual reality experience. Also inside the headset are high resolution sensors that track the motion of your head and shift your in-world view to match. It takes just two milliseconds for the sensors to tell the displays to update as your head moves, which means that the effect is convincingly real: as you physically move your head in any axis, the gameworld follows just as if you were there in real life."

So.. basically, it's one of those VR headsets that they were dinking around with in the 90's with a newer monitor? I dont get why you're using the word "new" here. This is a technology that we had in the stores when the latest major game console played Super Mario Brothers and the original Legend of Zelda. This is pretty much the definition of retro.

VR?
It works pretty good for flight sims I must admit, but I'm really struggling to find it useful for Excel graphical shell EVE. Well, it may be cool on a few occasion, but not very practical IMO.

Is it new? No
Is it revolutionary? No
Is it within everyone's reach? No
Would it add anything to the game? No

Not sure why you are curious. It might be cool, but do you use it?

So how do you see the keyboard to make commands or type in local?????

A good idea but not practical for a game like EVE.

I think it's more suited to console/PC controller games.

Using hot keys from a KB is gonna be tough.

One step closer to shooting someone in the eye with autocannons.

But I really don't see it benefiting EvE play all that much.

I dont care about 3D idea, why should i wear glasses or other device on my eyes to play a game or watch tv and to act like a zombie in my house ? better play for fun not like a robot and use your eyes in the most natural way

Nice gadget but I need way more resolution than that for EVE. Get back to me when they do one in 2560x1920.

My God, what fantastic new innovations will they come up with next? Video telephones? Portable computers? DIGITAL CAMERAS?

CCP, do you have one

have you ordered one

(would you like one)

their website suggested ordering a developer kit for our favorite games, and it made me think of you <3

no, not basically, it's not what we had in the 90's. the tracking has 2ms lag, and there haven't been graphics worthy of attempting VR, and we're closer to that than ever.

I disagree, and i think 720p is fine. it's not about having the glorious finished result at this point, it's about supporting the development of it.

if you need to look at your keyboard as you play, the visor is not your problem. my right thumb has 12 keybinds, my left hand has access to 40.

what you see on your screen you would see in the visor. my plan is make it look around a la right-click-and-drag, for situational awareness. it shouldn't be hard to get it to act like a monitor that always presses right-click. won't know until mine arrives in April. it's a simple function but I think it'll be cherry. I would like to see it 1080p in the future, but it's all that's available in a 5" screen atm.

the support I see necessary from CCP's side is toggling the smoothing of the in-space camera (take the camera momentum away) and that right-click look feature, because I imagine the oculus software-side will not be able to separate the right-click requirement from the mouse...

what you'd have is a player sitting in their chair, piloting, and looking around/down/up at their surroundings. the UI is a HUD, after all.

Do you people even know what the Oculus' contributions to the field are? Innovation isn't just about inventing whole new gadgets you know.

It's useless for a game like EVE though.

you think it's useless because you lack the creativity

its biggest innovation is a low response motion tracking ability.
