Good Sir;

You really can't play the PvP game your first year. If I were you I would just forget the game exists, pay your fee for it, and log in every few days to update your training queue.

I know that seems dull but the training queue is well done and has a nice interface--it is worth the 130 bucks. If you think you deserve to play solo in your first year you can always mine by yourself in High Sec.

And if you really want the truth, you should buy a second account in tandem and train up a Loki too. You will need two ships and two character-years training to Solo PvP.

Sad but true.

Feel free to ignore this advice. If you would like confirmation, check any killboard for SeaSaw's record...

While higher SP will certainly help in the end, when it comes to frigates there aren't many more skills a 50 million SP toon will have over a 5 SP million toon if the 5 Million SP toon is focused. That, and the thing that will make the biggest difference is pilot skill. A 5 Million SP toon that has planned and set up a fight will ALWAYS beat a 150 Million SP toon that derps headlong into a bad battle.

You are on the right track. I would suggest joining a PVP oriented corp, perhaps FW or RVB, and burn some ships. And have fun!

You will get about 250 DPS (overheated, about 200ish otherwise) out of a properly fit brawling merlin. It's important to train up your fitting skills and get thermodynamics ASAP for overheating if you don't have it already (then work on t2 guns, caldari frigate 5, and support skills such as navigation and gunnery). You can solo comets, hookbills, firetails, slicers (assuming you catch them), just check my killboard, or better yet throw in an application to CERBY, we're the corp you want to join if you're into learning the ways of flying caldari ships in pvp. Big smile

Weapon upgrades (since you use blasters this might come in handy)
small blaster
small blaster specialization

evasive maneuvring
navigation

Check if you got all these skills at lvl 4 U should be above 100dps even with t1 fitting I think

Thanks I know I've got a lt of these will check the rest though.

Wow.. I disagree I'm afraid.. I've been playing on and off for nearly a year. My char is a mixed bag of skills and only now am I focusing on pvp. To be honest though I wish I was in frigs in low months ago. I'm not bothered about k/d ratio is just great fun and exciting ratting, running and engaging in low. I'm learning loads about the game like how to evade, stay safe, insta warp, cloak tricks and most importantly my scanning skills to help find targets. So even though my fighting isn't there yet I'm developing lots of other very important skills that are more experienced based than SP based.. Plus having fun doing it. My kill will come soon, though I won my corp torny it's not the same as my first out in low.... "He drifts away and day dreams" :)
