"Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap" said Adreena as she bolted through the corridors.
"Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap", she continued in the Qui Es In Caelis.
Her litany changed to a breathless "frackity frack frack" when she arrived near her pod, undressed herself and climbed into it. While the goo started filling the egg, she touched the talisman hanging there and whispered a quick prayer. She realised she was more upset by the drones interrupting them right before they started digging into Arakata's datapad, than by the actual and tangible threat they posed. "Heh -way to sort your priorities, girl..."

"Ok, guys, there are a dozen baddies closing up to us, probably rogue drones. You can start screaming and running around."
"Permission to flail arms ?"
"Sure."

"Captain Sepherim, you're my anchor, right ?"

I dashed through the paths and out of the corridor connecting my ship to Astra's. As soon as I was back in it, I said:

-Wraith, disconnect the passage way connecting this ship to the Brown and Baggin' It. Send order to all crew members to man their battle stations, and sound the alarm. Open the pod and have it ready for me to enter it. Start scanning around us, and send petitions to the other three ships to join our fleet. My skills should prove a good bonus to them.-

I walked through the known corridors as the alarm started to ring and the red lights to blink into existance. Soon, the tranquility was completely obliterated, as everyone hurried to their proper positions. When time for war started, that was the only thing we should focus on. Scientists, FTLs,... all the rest would have to wait.

As I was taking out my clothes in order to get into the pod, the computer said through the internal voice systems: "Astra Pardus and Adreena Madeveda have just sent a message to the group. You also have a previous message by Telegram Sam and Adreena Madeveda in storage, would you like to play them?".

I set foot into the pod as I quickly meditated on my reply. Probably, if those previous messages had been important, both would have said so when we met, so they should be skipped.

-Just play the recent ones. And start my connection to the pod.-

As the crystals doors to the pod closed, I could feel the connections seeking their proper sockets in my back and the goo starting too pool around my feet. And soon, those were no more, and I was in space again, bathing in the radiation from the unknown nearby star. Systems were coming online one after the other as the crew members reported to their positions. And I ordered the motors to push the ship forward at full speed towards the incoming enemies. And then, my head was full with Astra's voice.

AstraPardus wrote:
If you guys can hear me... burn to within 5km of me if you start to take heavy hits, I have a remote armor rep fitted.

-Roger, captain Pardus. I'll probably need it if I am to tank, so remain close to me.-

I ordered the ship to correct the position slightly, to make sure I would be closer to the enemies than my fleet companions were. Afterall, hopefully the AI of the drones wouldn't be developed far, and they'd attack their closest target. As my orders were sent, the computer played the other message pending answer.

Adreena Madeveda wrote:
Captain Sepherim, you're my anchor, right?

-Affirmative, captain Madeveda.-

Then, I turned the channel to speak to all at once.

-INS Wraith taking forward position, remain shielded behind it until you are at appropriate distances to target your opposition and then start tearing through them one at a time. All focus on the smaller drones first, we'll move against the bigger ones as soon as those are out of the equation. My computer will be forwarding to you all the list of priority targets, secondary targets, and bonuses. I don't think they'll try to warp out, but if they do don't chase them. Let's focus on holding them, we don't know how many more may still be in the seed ship and head to us once their scouts confirm our position.-

"Come on, steel beasts. Let's see what you're made of..." With that thought in mind, and the confirmation from all stations that the ship was fully operational, I took a second to clear my mind and then the battle was all that existed. No individual, no fear, no doubt, no personality... only war. Like so many times before, just a war machine among the stars.

T. Sam turned the Jaguar around and brought it to 10km behind the Sin. If they were going to take a static defense, he didn't want the Jag in front just yet, where it could be sniped at long range by the drone battleship. The drones' AI might make the same decision they had-- take out the small ships first. He'd wait to until the ships closed range, so that he could use the Jaguar's speed for tracking-avoidance, and its short-range autocannons to maximum effect.

[OOC- Having to post quickly using a borrowed PC. I didn't have a chance to read the most recent posts, so sorry if this one doesn't sync with them. Basically, T. Sam's actions will follow the flow of what the fleet pilots decide].

(So YAY your first fight! Before I describe what happens, let's start out with some rolls to reflect how you all perform during the fight. If you want to invoke an aspect to get a bonus, or re-roll a roll let me know and I'll adjust them. In general the target number (TN) is 1 for a regular success and 5 to generate spin*. I will offer to compel an aspect if it seems appropriate if you do not want the compel tell me and I will remove it, and you wont get the fate point.)

Sepherim: (You have a TN of 2 to establish the "Defensive Formation" aspect your roll is (Perc 3 + 1,0,0,0 = 4) so you don’t need to use the fate point.

To reflect how well you identify targets and find target positions
-Perception 3 + -1 -1 0 0 = 1

To reflect how well you track targets and apply damage.
-Agility 3 + 1 -1 1 0 = 4

To reflect how well you maneuver your ship to avoid and or intercept damage
-Agility 3 + 0 -1 0 0 = 2 + Your free invoke of "Defensive Formation" gives a +2 = 4

To reflect how well you manage your weapons systems and drones
-Willpower 3 + 0 1 1 1 = 6* - compel "Defensive Formation" to reflect the limitation of being outside your optimal range = 4

To reflect how well you act on opportunities and evaluate the battle dynamics.

-Willpower 2 + -1 0 1 0 = 2 - compel "Jack of all trades" because you should have spent more time practicing this whole combat thing.
-Reasoning 3 + 0 -1 1 -1 = 2

AstraPardus:

-Perception 3 + -1 -1 1 -1 = 1 - compel "The “Brown Baggin' It”, a Sin class Black Ops Battleship" because those drones need micromanagement = -1 + 1 for drone related actions = 0

You swing you gaze towards the sun. Its bright blue light flares from your perspective. After a few moments a contact enters the grid and your short range sensors clearly identify it as a one of the rogue drone frigates. A few moments later another frigate comes into view, then two more, then a group of 8.

Obviously equipped with micro warp drives they seem to be moving at about 2000 m/s. Despite the speed with which they close into range, the seconds slipping by seem to stretch on an on. Astra launches a set of sentry drones and they all swivel around to begin tracking the incoming frigates. Moments later they let loose a volley of blasts out toward the lead frigate. At this range and without transversal, the blaster shots hit home and the drone explodes. Pouring through the expanding cloud of shrapnel and radiation, the next three drones close to within range. Another volley from the sentry drones dispatches one of the three but obviously your shots aren’t coming fast enough.

The bank of blasters on “Brown Bagin’ it” charge to full, and fire on the next drone. Once again the lack of transversal means the shot tears through the flimsy frigate hull and a third drone is destroyed. At the same moment the bright red hued laser beams of the Wraith focus on the last of the 4 lead drones and leave horrible trenches of boiling metal across its dingy armor. The sentry drone flight lets lose a third shot targeting the lead frigate. Before the blasts of charged particles impact the drone the Wraith slices through it with another beam from its lasers.

The group of 8 frigate drones close to within 50 KM. Astra, her sentries and Sephrerim coordinate their shots and another 4 fall before they reach 30KM. Unfortunately the drones seem to have realized the danger posed by your large guns and they begin to spread out. Your shots begin to miss. The sentries take one more out before Astra calls them back in and your own swarm of Hobgoblin scout drones flies out toward the enemy. The laser beams from the wraith change to a serene looking yellow. The beams connect with a drone, and it trails a cloud of radiation leaking from its damaged reactor. The next shot from the Brown Baggin’ it grazes the damaged drone but even an indirect hit is enough to cause secondary explosions and completely disable it. The remaining two drones have veered around and have charged in towards the Wraith. The Hobs have connected with the one on the left and are steadily tearing through it’s armor. The Qui Es In Caelis lets out a volley of hot metal that tears through the drone causing a reactor breach and subsequent explosion.

The last drone closes to 10KM and lets off shots of its own but even the un-bonused shields of the Wraith absorb the violent energy. Without delay it is torn apart by green laser beams and artillery rounds from the Tanto and the Qui Es In Caelis. The hobs arrive late and are left idling in the cloud of dust and debris. A few seconds pass, you look around, the adrenaline still coursing through your veins.

Before you have a chance to decide if it’s over, a fleet of drones warp onto grid. Their warp bubbles collapse and the assortment of destroyers, cruisers and the battleship come to a stop 10km away. Immediately they begin spreading out and targeting your group.

The Wraith gets slammed by shots from multiple destroyers and its shields are bypassed completely. The next volley from the cruiser hulls tears into your armor leaving you smoldering but whole. You brace for another impact as the battleship levies its guns at you. The shot is bad but thankfully your armor held and you still have full functionality. Before the drones take another shot a green light from the Brown Baggin’ it washes over you. Billions of nanites, each carrying a dose of armor repairing gel, swarm over your hull filling in cracks and bolstering the plating.

Meanwhile, Telegram, in the Tanto, races out towards the nearest destroyer. He lets lose a round but must be orbiting too fast and the shots go wide. The Qui Es In Caelis targets the same destroyer and their combined firepower is enough to shred it with a few rounds of ammo. The Hobgoblins swarm over another of the destroyers. The Wraith sends out beams of white laser to sear through a third destroyer. Face to face with another battleship the Brown Baggin’ it takes a few moments to load anti matter charges into its blasters.

The Tanto is targeted by the two remaining destroyers. Telegram is able to move in close and keep the shots from going through the Tanto’s shielding but is unable to effectively return fire. Adreena takes advantage of the drone destroyers focused attention and prepares a shot to hit one as it maneuvers to get in better range. The shots hit deep and the drone destroyer falls apart under the rain of bullets.

As the last destroyer is taken out by the hobgoblins Astra recalls them and sends out a full flight of Hammerhead Medium combat drones. They pour out toward the group of drone cruisers. The Drone Battleship fires again and again on the Wraith. Fortunately Sepherim is able to out maneuver the large gun and the shots glance off. The Battleship re-directs its guns and fires on the Brown Baggin’ it. The impact from the drone battleship hits hard. Almost poetically your crew just finished loading the Antimatter rounds. You unleashes on the drone battleship sending bolt after bolt into its hull.

Now that the Wraith can focus on offence as well it lays into the enemy cruisers with its bank of laser turrets. As the closest one falls you quickly change focusing crystals out to maximize the damage to your next target. The Hammerheads tear through the armor of another drone cruiser. Recognizing the opportunity, the Tanto swoops by and blows through the damaged cruiser’s hull. Quickly targeting the next, the Tanto lays into it without needing to adjust heading.

The Qui Es In Caelis coordinates shots with the Wraith and together they finish off the third and then the last cruiser. The damage the battleship is doing starts to eat away at the Brown Baggin’ It’s armor. Conversely the antimatter rounds have already torn into the battleship’s hull and with a final volley from everyone the last of the rogue drones explodes in a fiery gout.

The shield bar started to reload, as did the capacitator. The cannons started to cool down and the armor repairers to cover the holes in the armor unopposed. It had been a real close call. Too close. And we didn't know if there were more in the seed ship, and if there were how many. It didn't look good. We needed time to recover.

At least, all the systems in mind reported green. No crewmembers had suffered significant injuries. Nothing irreplaceable was lost. I ordered the ship to turn and to fly away at full speed. The frigates would be better scouts to search for a new safespot for us to hide in for a while, but for now taking distance could keep any more incoming drones from jumping too near to us.

-Captains, all report status on your ships. The INS Wraith will be ready in 1:23 minutes for combat again, with full capacitator restored and all damaged restored. Captain Sam, you've proven quite good in navigating around, we'll need a new safespot for the whole fleet to recover in case more enemies shall come. Captain Madeveda, your mechanic skills should come in handy now, so proceed to scan all around us searching for more incoming enemies while we wait for the new coordinates to arrive. Captain Pardus, deactivate all unneeded systems in your ship so your capacitator recovers quicker, we'll need all that firepower again soon enough.-

As I said those words, I could feel my body "going to sleep". It's the only analogy I can find to expressing how it feels to deactivate the different modules of a ship. They just slept, and with them went some of my inhuman senses, the steel prolongations of my expanded consciousness.

-Oh, to all, you've done a great job here. Thanks to it, we're all alive now, it's been a honor to fight by your side.-

Together we had avoided death. For now.

Sam searched for something more dignified to say that "Oh yeah!", but was at a loss. "Oh yeah! Well done all. Too, too close though...."

"OK, Captain Sepherim, will mark a new safe spot. " He saved marks on all of the drone wrecks. After marking a new safe spot, he intended to return and investigate them. Anything they could retrieve from them might provide information that could be useful at some point.

Apparently this was the same set of drones he'd warped close to before. Was the seed ship still there? He aligned to the saved coordinates spot closes to the sun and engaged warp. One-third of the way to location he marked a safe spot and relayed it to the other pilots. Once at the spot near the sun, he aligned to bookmark near the seed ship location and began a narrow-angle dscan.

After the last round was shot, after the last drone exploded, Adreena felt, hidden behind layers of metal, circuits and various non-human datas, her heart pounding. Violent, regular beats against her ribs, each one an affirmation that she was still alive. She was glad, in that moment, not to be her flesh body alone -adrenaline comedowns were the worst. While she was, for all intends and purposes, a ship, she didn't have to deal with hands shaking uncontrollably.

"Grettir, is everyone down there all right ?"
"We're fine, miss."
"Good job, everyone."
"Thanks, miss."

Telegram:

You perform your warp without any trouble. Once aligned you perform your scan (Perc 3 1, 0, -1, 1, = 4) and quickly find the seed ship. After a few moments you come to the conclusion that the swarm of drones is no longer surrounding the ship.

Adreena:

You scan the surroundings (Perc 3 + -1, -1, 0, 1 = 2) and the area you are in for hostile ships, but nothing registers. Including combat probes in the scan parameters does not register any additional signatures either.

All:

The wrecks of the various drone ships in your immediate vicinity all seem to be inert. Your computer labels the wreck of the battleship as containing an intact module or cargo of some sort.

From the new safe spot, Sam transmitted to the other three pilots:
"Message for your review when time permits. The seed ship is still in its last position, but the drone ships are gone. So those were probably the ones we killed."

"To return to what we were doing: I'm going to start reviewing the info from Aratakar's datapad. Here's a wild idea. We have a seed ship with with a jump gate attached. Arataka indicated that he'd seen seed ships before. And he has knowledge of how jump physics work. If we can deploy the gate into a grav well in this system, it should point sync with and point back to the gate the seed ship started from. In other words, it could allow a connection to another system closer to Gallente space. That could be our way back to known space. A lot of ifs, but the good news is we've killed the escort drones. And we have Arataka, who could provide the math and physics on all this. Good job on not punching him out or spacing him, pilots."

"I've sent the coordinates for this safe spot, now warping back to loot the drone wrecks. We might need components in order to rig something later, or we might get some cyber components with useful maps of their AI. Please don't damage the wrecks or our buddy Arataka," he said with a grin in his voice.

He opened comms to the two Jaguar crewpeople. "OK, good fight there, we did well. Standing instructions: In the event of Jaguar destruction, hail any of the three other ships and ask for retrieval of your escape pods. I think any of pilots provide rescue if they can. If you have a choice, go with Adreena or AstraPardus over Sepherim's Amarr ship. I doubt he's a slaver, but... preference is for Adreena or Pardus."

The Jaguar warped back to the combat site and began extracting components from the wrecks.

Telegram's message came in through the comms, and I listened carefully to all of it. Aparently, the threat was gone, and Adreena hadn't apparently detected any threats. Thus, battle was over, and we had been victorious at a small cost. For now, all was going well. With a quick command, I added the new coordinates to my favorite places, so I could jump to it as soon as was needed.

-Excellent news, captain Sam. Seems like the wreck of one of the drones may have something useful, I'm going to check it. Does anyone have a salvager so we can salvage them all?-

I certainly hadn't one installed, as much as I always thought I should. Meanwhile, I ordered my ship to realign with that drone wreck, and started to proceed slowly and cautiously. I still wanted to keep the capacitator use to a minimum so it would recharge quicker, just in case it was necessary to enter combat again.

-Captain Sam, when you were close to the seed ship, did the gate look complete?-

"Capacitor fully charged." I said over the comms. Good thing I was trave fit, cap goes up as quickly as it can.

As the armor nanites had finished their job of smoothing over and filling in any damage that remained from the Rogue Drones, I hit the subspace engines and made my way towards the shredded hull of the drone battleship. It looked like there was something left over, perhaps some of those parts that Nas uses to enhance my drones would be in there.

I position myself to examine the wreck and release my little salvager drone, once more...

My ship finally reached the position of the drone wreck as my capacitator reported to be full. So, one by one, I started to reactivate all systems that had been deactivated in order to keep energy, and my "body" felt whole again. Astra was right by me as I started to examine the wreck looking for useful things, my drones working with hers in order to obtain whatever was inside safely. Then, in came Telegram's voice and then Adreena's.

Well, those were potentially good news indeed, and it was about time some good news came our way.

-Well, if it is complete, then we may indeed have a way out. Great! As for comms, I don't think we need FTL coms once we get to the other side, we can use local communication channels instead like we do now, and rely on those that come to greet us to transfer the message beyond that point until we can get into a station and fix the ships. Of course, if we can repair them before, that would be excellent, but I'm afraid those things are beyond my knowledge.-

You inspect the contents of the BS drone wreck and find what it contains. Your cargo drones pull apart the wreck to find some self contained device evidently still intact. It must have been protected deep within the ships converted cargo hold. The circuitry seems to be viable and it came apart from the wreck without any trouble but without access to the database you have no way of easily naming the thing. After running some scans, you share them with each other.

(Some quick Knowledge rolls...

Sepherim Know 2 (1, 1, 1, 0) 5
Telegram Know 3 (1, 1, 1, -1) 5
Astra Know 2 (-1, 0, -1, 0) 0
Adreena Know 3 (1, 0, 1, 1) 6*

Therefore...)

Astra doesn't understand the thing at all.

Sam and Sepherim guess that this device is what the drones used to communicate.

Adreena you actually recognized the device. The last one you saw was called a Hive Link or something like that. Given your ability to jury rig systems together you think that if you wanted to, you could probably access it. Whether or not connecting your ships computer to the Rogue drone network is a good idea, is up to you.

-Well, a drone communications array. Could be useful to try and repair our ships modules. We should probably dismantle it and use those pieces to repair whatever is fried in ours.-

I make a small pause, as the drones finish introducing the item into the cargohold. My crew place it in an empty space, far from anything it can come in contact with. Last thing we want is for that thing to start trying to take over my ship.

-Just thinking, but maybe our comms aren't actually fried. Maybe we're just too far from any relay station, so they show nothing even if they work perfectly. Could this be?-
