I agree with he OP, it would be really nice if an orca can carry a BS and a noctis.. and I could bet the gankers would support this now that an orca has lost its ability to hide what it hauls. My work around for now is to have a noctis in each of the race areas where I mission. Problem of course is still getting my hauler, orca, and mission BS to the new location.

We are in a similar situation and i do the same.

I have three combat mission hubs set up. Each with a Noctis and a few Battleships/Maraugders ready to go. I usually jump clone between bases.

The desire for carrying more rigged ships came about when i set up a 4th base for level 4 mining missions with exhumers, a noctis, a Venture and a covert ops frigate... One day i fancied ice mining and though it would be handy to pack that lot up in my orca and jump the 5 or 6 jumps to an ice field.

Obviously i couldn't even fit the exhumer and the noctis in.

TL;DR
but you can trransport rigged ships with freighter
(just courier contract the ship to an alt or friend and it becomes a package, then u can put em in cargo)

EDIT; guess u can transport em in a beastower if its small ships to i guess :/

If there hadn't been too much text for you to read you would have seen that we already know that..... thanks for you contribution anyway.

Your better workaround would be getting good missioning ship, train your security connections skill to at least 4 and blitz missions without wasting time salvaging. In average that could work better.

Ahhh.. but what if you actually enjoy the salvaging afterwards......?

I enjoy doing missions and salvaging. I love that CCP gave us a Noctis.

A long time ago I suggested a T1 freighter with a 50-100m3 Cargo bay and and ship maintenance bay equal to the remaining m3 of the T1 hull. Basically you would pick the option of cargo or ship maintenance. The contracts and shrink wrap gave an option to do basically the same thing with just more paperwork.

A configurable cargohold on the freighters would be nice.

Something along the lines of:

0% x; 100% y
25% x; 75% y
50% x; 50% y
75% x; 25% y
100% x; 0% y

Where x could be regular cargo and y could be a hold to carry fitted ships without the ability to launch them or refit ships that are in your proximity.

Even a:

0% x; 100% y
100% x; 0% y

would be nice already.

Any configurability should be done in the style of existing systems. Either freight-only modules or sub-systems. Though you would have to be careful not to open the door to other modules so it might have to be its own system, but like that of others. Each module would give you 250k storage, either ship, cargo, or maybe or. The amounts could be tuned based on the type. Personally I would ilke to see modules for the hold types other than the main cargo bay.

I'd love it if you could reconfigure the Orca for different roles, but if that's not possible, how about different ships based on the Orca hull?

1) Current version, the jack-of-all-trades Orca
2) ORE-centric version for mining ops, much larger Ore hold, but small (1000?) cargo and fleet hangar, maybe smaller ship maintenance bay
3) Ship hauling version - larger ship maintenance bay, but small cargo/fleet and no ore hold
4) Cargo version - better fills the gap between freighters and industrials (or the current Orca) - larger cargo hold, no fleet or ship maintenance bay.

1. There is no cheap solution, if you're looking for one.
2. Train up an alt to Freighter, courier contract the fit ships to that alt, move ships, problem solved. Getting up to freighter is a piece of cake compared to others.

Buying a freighter is an investment, so if you aren't willing to invest in that, and don't want to use Red Frog (someone calling them "slow" is utter and complete BS), your choices are limited.
