Hi. I've returned to Eve after a years break, and I'm still a carebear. I've done a lot of missions and some incursions, and I have almost 3bill in my wallet, and I'd like to find out how I could invest the money, and perhaps work on a career in trading and the market.
I'm not sure where to start, but I'd love some suggestions for things to spend my money and time on.

One of the most profitable versions of trading, and one of the most time-consuming, is station trading. Essentially a station trader will sit in a market hub and buy low and sell high. He/she makes a profit off of other players who want quick isk and aren't willing to spend the time competing with other traders by consistently adjusting their orders. Also, many players will sell (or buy) for a reduced profit because their form of income requires them to be active in another region and they end up making more if they aren't spending time selling their loot. A station trader capitalizes on this by setting both buy and sell orders for the same item and their success is determined by the volume and margin they trade for. If you want to get into station trading I would recommend starting in a smaller trade hub than Jita, such as Ammar, Rens, Dodixie, or Hek. Look for items that have a reasonably high daily volume, a good margin (be sure to include taxes in your calculations), and a history of filling both the buy and sell orders (check the average price the item goes for compared to the high and low).

Another form of trading is inter-regional speculation. With this method a trader will compare regional prices and put their buy and sell orders in two different regions. Often the buy orders will be in a region that doesn't have a trade hub and then sold at the nearest one. This method requires a lot of logistical planning and for small-scale operations it helps to have access to your own freighter. If you don't have the freighter however, or don't want to invest in it quite yet, then there are several hauling services that can move your items for a fee.

There are many other methods of marketeering out there, and I'm sure many more that I've never even considered. Don't be afraid to experiment and play around with the market for yourself. After all, the point of trading is ultimately to have fun. Good luck!

If you are not an hardcore 8h-12h/day player you may as well read this post and the links contained therein.

Easy, just buy all the CA-2 and CA-1 implants, wait 3-9 months, get 25-100% back?

obviously highly speculative, but many would argue that it is indeed a likely situation

Take peoples advice on "WAYS" to trade but "NEVER" take someones advice on waht to buy. If you do you will be buying their over priced stock and aiding them with their manipulation attempt. Case in point, the guy above bought lots of CA-1 and CA-2's at rock bottom, but rather than wait the 9-12 months he wants his money now, but he has to move the market now to get it. If you buy in with 3 bill now you will increase the price and he will sell out now for a nice profit leaving you with a more expensive stock of items you need to wait months to sell off at a profit.
