Hey,
I'm a bit of a tinkerer, but im not an engineer. No official engineering know how, just common sense.
Is there a free cad or design program out there, limited in its scope and abilities, that would allow me to do rough schematics or designs on the pc.

Thanks

I have had a lot of friends use Google Sketch up. Not purely Cad-like but it works well.

A quick google search produces this.

I go well with Quafe...

Free version of Sketch-up actually doesn't work so well; never tried the paid version. It's not awful, it just suffers from some huge limitations and tends to freeze up, bug out, or lose memory in my experience, however limited. Very accurate in some respects though, when it works.

Honestly, if you want free CAD, my best suggestion would be to use 2D CAD rather than 3D and use a drawing program with pixel measurements. Just decide on a ration of pixels to unit of measurement and work from there. You'll never have the same issues with a simple paint program as you'll have with those others.

Personally, I've always like PnP. No modeling, paint, or 2D/3D program has managed to provide me better tools for the job than that yet. Not for drafting anyway. 3d art and modeling can't be applied to that, in which case something similar to 3ds max would suit my purpose better; particularly as I don't want to go out and buy all that I'd need for modeling effectively in clay.
