Thread Locking and True Spam

I've noticed a ton of threads being locked lately and it's usually because a moderator has deemed the topic as spam, case in point: mining bumping. I really could care less about the issue; however, I noticed a discussion about it was opened and subsequently closed by CCP until a decision could be made on the issue. Still, this is a forum. Forum as defined by Webster means: "a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas."

When a moderator closes discussion of an expression of an idea and also bans further topics, that seems as if it is violating the very idea of a forum and becomes more like a dictation of the governing force's opinion. I would like to open this idea up and hear what other fellow players think of it? Do you consider excessive moderation of forums an abuse of a moderator's position? Keep in mind this thread is not a personal attack against CCP, Devs, GMs, or ISDs. The purpose of this thread is to provide constructive criticism and concern for the current direction eves forums are headed. In essence it is to do as a forum SHOULD do and that is to provide an atmosphere for discussion and expression of an idea. So what do you all think?

I'd lock people in Eve for less.

Odyssey: Repacking in POS hangars for modules +1,  but please for other stuff too, especially containers. Make containers openable in POS hangars.

If only there was a key to this lock you're talking about.

And that key would be actual non-spam/troll threads. So I think that if the overall quality were to go up, we would see less locks on threads.

I can certainly understand that point of view, but it does concern me when a topic has been presented, locked (not due to inactivity), and further banned from being brought back up again. I would imagine, from my perspective, that this presents the issue of overdoing it with censorship.

Way to go, ignoring that a forum is run by it's people,
which makes the purpose of the forum completely irrelevant,
if the people don't approve of it.

For you to understand: In the last thread, as usual,
the sociopathic terrorist carebears couldn't resist on insulting people,
so it got locked.

This one will get locked too.
Rightfully so.

So, given the fact that I've been dealing with this issue as a member of the Community Team, and I'm currently keeping an eye on the GM discussion regarding it, I'll add a few words here.

The problem isn't "censorship" or not allowing people to speak about this topic. The problem comes from the fact that there are two very distinct opinions on it that clash very aggressively.

You'll notice that the larger of the threads regarding miner bumping were left open for a while, and were cleaned several times before being closed. The problem is that we've tried repeatedly to let people have a civil discussion about this topic, but it very swiftly degenerates into very charged trolling, flaming and personal attacks from both sides of the fence.

The "official" thread, opened by myself even went this way after 24 hours or so of being posted, but despite this I let it run its duration as promised before closing it and forwarding popular opinion off to the Lead GMs for discussion.

There are a number of topics on the forums that produce this kind of reaction, and as such they're taken care of proactively to make sure that our moderators don't spend quite literally hours of their time devoted to tackling a single thread.

I can see your point, Octoven, don't get me wrong. I also think you have very valid concerns. In the same respect though if we leave threads like this alone and let them fill with bile and personal attacks it creates a very toxic forum environment.

We have proper channels for people to communicate with us regarding what they feel may be an abuse of game mechanics, and the GM Team have very robust policies that are constantly reviewed regarding game mechanics and "flavor of the month" player actions.

Similarly we also have proper channels to bring up complaints regarding moderation and discussion thereof.

We have a number of people who have simply decided to engage in toxic behavior that is detrimental to the well being of the community overall, including spamming the forums, making personal attacks on members of ISD and the Community Team, and persistently harassing us via email/evemail and on third party social networking sites to the point that we have had to block them.

Our position on discussion of moderation is simple, drop us a civil and well reasoned petition and we'll respond and have a discussion with you to clear up any concerns you have on a one to one basis.

I hope this explains our reasoning Smile
