Hey,

I have been giving some thought to heading out into null just to check it out. I am still a relatively new player (under a year playing). I don't think I would have an extended stay, and only really plan on trying out some betl ratting for now.

I am a pure gallente pilot so far with a large part of my SP in drones. So I had 2 main questions and am open to any other wisdom as well.

First, where should I go? I am guessing NPC null, but I am not super familiar with all of the diffeent areas (it's a lot to read up on).

Second is what to fly. I'm not looking for maximum isk or anything. This is just a fun trip to get out there, maybe leave a jump clone for future. So I'd like to take something I can actualy rat in but also something I have a chance to making it there in as well. I can't fly any T3's yet, and I am currently training for an Ishtar so that will have to wait till next time. I was thinking of an ishkur as I have at least read it can belt rat but it's also a frig so I should be able to zip through areas. I am also solid in a vexor, myrmidon or dominix.

Thanks in advance

You can take whatever ship you want, just go to a place in Null sec where you have allies, or else you'll be getting ganked left and right trying to rat in hostile systems. I usually rat in a BC. Enough DPS to take out BS spawns, and fast enough to align and warp out when I see a red/neut in local.

NPC null sec isn't even 100% safe. Just because it's owned by NPCs doesn't mean players won't go out of their way to kill you.

Yea I didn't figure any part of 0.0 is safe. I will probably be running a bit as I am going solo and have no friends in 0.0.

I just figured NPC null might be a bit easier as there should be more NPC stations I could use.

I am no null-guru but have just recently taken a similar plunge. I ran the pirate epic arcs a few times and then decided to go try some extended nullsec carebear mission running .. in NPC null of course.

If you have decent standings (for lvl3 missions) with gallente faction (or FIO) then you can access the guristas epic mission arc. It will take you into Venal ... guristas NPC null ... and can be run with a frigate hull (interceptor / assault ship). These arcs are a great way to get some nullsec carebear experience ... and some fun missions and decent goodies.

There are two pirate epic arcs and they can each be accessed via three different routes ... at the lvl3 agent level. They are ...

  • Smash and Grab (Guristas pirate arc) : Gallente Federation (Federal Intelligence Office); Caldari State (Ytiri ); and Guristas (Guristas).
  • Angel Sound (Angels pirate arc) : Minmatar Republic (Republic Security Services ); Amarr Empire (Imperial Navy); Angel Cartel (Dominations).

Then there's plain ol' mission running. It's slower than hisec (much more effort just staying safe yourself) but I think the return is 2 - 3 x the hisec equivalent. You do have to assume that everyone in the system is out to kill you ... most are ... but I don't agree with those that advise that you should join some sort of local group. While that is certainly a way of making things easier it's far from essential. Either way you will lose ships, and pods, and some ppl will make you unhappy ... but you will also learn heaps and it is a lot of fun.
Chances are you'll start with lvl1 missions, which isn't a bad thing given the amount of effort you will be putting into learning how to survive and get around safely.

Ships? That very much depends on your skills and resources. If you're a new player you're not likely to be into T3s with dictor nullifiers yet to get around ... but they are the ant's-pants for this. If you have a second account and can run a cloaky scout it will make things a lot lot easier. Alternatively talk a buddy / corpmate into coming along for the ride. The mission running itself is very like in hisec ... altho you get some different missions (e.g. blockade against CONCORD) ... but the getting to-and-from the mission site, and having ppl tryign to probe scan you to come visit, is the different stuff.

Then there's exploration in nullsec. Same idea, but needs even more specialty capabilities (scanning etc).

Mining etc. yes, sure, i suppose but I've never tried nulslec mining outside of very safe sov null systems ... where I was blue.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I am going to bother with missions this time around. I am thinking more of just a short trip, more like a scouting trip. See if I can get there. See what I find when I get there. Maybe leave a ship and jump clone behind for future.

Jump Frog can help you with that. We offer a FREE jump clone creation service and we've just opened offices in all the NPC nosec regions in EVE. Just join, reset your medical clone to one of our nosec offices, and scout the area. You can even use a disposable alt so you're taking ZERO risks. And its FREE.

Train stealth bomber and go invade goon/test space to poach their serp rats. Upon encounter of whine, cloak up and afk until it subsides.Bear

Get in a stealth bomber, load it with as many of your racial torps as you can, and find a nice NPC 0.0 system to kill some rats in. The SB will pay for itself in a couple hours of ratting and the only ships that are safer to travel in 0.0 in are a CovOps cloaked and bubble-proof T3 or a CovOps frig (but the T3 is very expensive and the CovOps can't do much solo).

Make sure you fit a MSE for ratting, you need some buffer. Here's the fit I use for killing Angels out in 0.0, works like a charm and is only about 30M total, so it won't break the bank.

This is what I have done to accommodate faster future pirate epic arc completion. I gate-jumped my way into Curse / Venal the first time round and since then have been accepting the starter mission in hisec / lowsec and then clone-jumping into null to run the arc ... or to run normal missions in-between times.

If you're just going in to have a look-around and to get some experience surviving in null, then the best ship is either your basic covops frigate runabout (mine are nano fit, covops cloak, dual prop ... or you could go with warp core stabilisers if you prefer) or a T3 setup for moving thru null (interdiction nullifier, covops cloak, and a couple of warp core stabilisers). If you also want to try do some ratting or otherwise shoot at something / someone then the basic covops is not much use and you're facing the choice between a stealth bomber or a T3 (with stuff in cargohold to reconfigure into a combat setup) as your best option.

Of course you can also travel to, and thru, nullsec in a non-covops-cloak ship ... but it's usually safer being able to warp cloaked, and the T3 interdiction nullifier is a huge additional safety multiplier when you're in null.

I see a previous posting by red-frog that looks very interesting, and may be of some help to you. You would still need to get your clone into a ship, but there are often fair markets in some nullsec regions ... not entirely reliable though.

Good luck. I'll wave if I see you out there.

I found that a cov ops frigate is the best ship to use when getting into, around and out of 0.0 space, especially the Cheetah.

Can use just about anything to rat in, even a Dessy. But, a brutix or Myrm would be fine.

Go check out Providence. They have a NRDS(Not Red Don't Shoot) policy. Its about as safe as null is going to be and as long as you don't go causing fights, they will leave you alone. You still not 100% safe as anyone can just jump in and shoot you, but its a good place to get some confidence.
