If you pay these clowns your an idiot and deserve to be scammed out of your money.

Losec Gate Campers 'charge' to let people live too, and as soon as you've paid, they kill you.
Thier permit is only enforcable insomuch as they have to spend ISK to blow you up.

While I'm not a miner, I do feed my PvP with missions, and given that 10Misk is only half a mission's worth of bounty/loot I don't really see that being a huge problem for a miner at a similar level of activity either, even if it's not honored as well as it should be or some other faction that you didn't pay protection money to finds you.

I mean, you're talking about mining in a hulk, that's a lot of cash you're willing to lose to begin with, if there's even a chance the offer's legit then that small an isk investment in the racket is probably worth it.

0.5 is still hisec and therefore only gets npc non-elite frigate spawns

In 0.6 and 0.5 you get sometimes those random faction frigate spawns (Dread Guristas, Dark Blood etc.). Not sure about 0.7.

Unless they have changed it recently...

Just remembered that I have to get that LG Crystal set completed at some point.

Elite = assault ship/interceptor equivelant i.e. ones with "dire" in the name for guristas. It is important because the interceptor equivelant scrambles and both can be tricky for a barges drones to kill. If ccp had any balls they would spawn in h sec, at least in 0.5/0.6 but the bears can't even handle that much risk. Faction frigs like you refer to can spawn anywhere their equivelant non faction frig can, you get them in 0.7 and 0.8 too. They tend to only have the abilities of their non faction version though so none scramble.

If you think that a protection racket is a good thing and something to be supported, you should go down to Miami, NYC, or Jersey. Make sure you find a part of town that is currently under one, then go live under one yourself outside of game as well. I mean, if they are so for the game, and increase your quality of game play, you should definitely experience it in real life as well. After all, it should increase your quality of life there as well. Everyone loves crooked cops you know?

the Hulk has an extra high slot, so should get superior yields.

Even though particular numbers were given, I'd like to point out that number of high slots/turrets isn't a yield factor anymore. All ships except Covetor/Hulk have static role bonuses to compensate for lacking high slot so the only thing that number of turrets will affect is how fast you will burn through crystals.

The difference in yield of Mack and Hulk comes from ship bonuses and slot layout: Mack has 1% yield bonus per exhumer level while Hulk gets 3% per level IIRC. On the other hand Mack has more low slots that can be used for Mining Laser Upgrades. Watch your fittings though as you may wish to use some for tank.
