Which frig/destroyer for a carebear in need of reform?

Way too many skill points from years as a carebear. All frig to 5. Looking to play around with T1 frig/destroyers for 1 v 1 and small gang PVP. Used to be that most agreed that rifter and thrasher were the boats to beat. Recent posts seem to mention

1) Punisher. Very tough tank, T2 lasers give you great range options

2) Coercer. Same old long range sniper setup for sniper support in small group fights

3) Corax with T2 rockets for MWD/fight under point in 1v1 setups

Also intrigued by TD bonused ships.........

Thoughts?

If you have frig skills to 5 why not go with a good frigate you can actually win 1 v 1 fights in? Have a look at the Daredevil or Dramiel.

merlin incursus slasher breacher and executioner are good frigs now avoid the rifter its crap.
thrasher catalyst corax and dragoon are my fav dessies.

Better off flying ships you can afford to lose, also you will get more fights in a ship people are more willing to engage.

For brawling I would recommend Tristan, Incursus, Merlin and Punisher, Algos and Thrasher in destroyer category.

For kiting Slasher, Condor and Atron. Rail Cat is good.

My recommendations:
Frigate -- Merlin, Rifter, or Tristan
Destroyer -- Thrasher, Catalyst, or Algos

For the Tristan and Algos, I'm assuming you're trained pretty well in drones. If not, go with other ships.

For 1v1:

Grab a frigate you like (Not the Suppport frigs and not the Scanfrigs), think about what you would like to achieve (Kiting? Brawling? EWAR from hell?), design a fitting, buy it 10 times and go waste them. After every engagement, think of what you might have done better etc etc.


For small gang, ask your buddies what they want to do. For example if you're heading out with some armor logi i wouldn't bring a condor.
