PI - noob question about factories

Hey, new to PI I have a few questions

Is there a way to have my factories keep producing stuff with materials from storage facilities or do I manually have to
keep transferring materials in order for them to keep producing stuff?

I started out letting my extractors send materials directly to the factories but felt like I was losing some materials along the way cuz factories couldnt keep up.

Now I'm extracting directly to sstorage which is working fine but gets kinda dull to keep having to transfer stuff to factories
each 30 mins.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong

create a route from the storage to the factories,

Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

Always route all materials to a launch pad / storage and from a storage / launch pad.

Here is an example of why.

You have 2 basic factories, and 1 advanced factory. The 2 basics feed directly to the advanced. Every 60 minutes the 2 basics feed to the advanced, and the advanced dumps the items into the storage unit.

Now what happens is that often the 3 factories will finish at the same time. So the 2 basics route the materials to the advanced, but the advanced hasn't had a chance to route its completed material. We're talking about .5 second difference here, so the basic routes the materials, the advanced is still completing its run, and the basic materials are destroyed (no space where they were routed to) and then 1/2 a second later the advanced completes and routes. The same thing happens with extractor control units.

So always do the following:

Extractor control unit > storage. Storage to basic factory. Basic factory to storage. storage to advanced factory. Advanced factory to storage.

Here is a mostly decent tutorial that shows you how to link your ECU to a launch pad and factories to the launchpad and how to get all of the P0 materials automated to make P1 materials without having to manually tell anything to do anything. You will have to wait for the first ECU cycle so that you can route materials to the factories, but once that is done, you don't have to do it again unless you change materials or want to change routes.

This same basic principle can be used for all things if you have a more complex setup and taking P0 to P2.

There are many other great you tube tutorials on different PI setups.

You don't have to wait for the ECU to finish a cycle before you route to a launch pad or to the factories. The ECU will list what you're getting under "products" when you click it, even before its first cycle finished. You can run a route using that tab.
