Advice needed - Eve online on Mac vs PC

i am in a position that i need to buy both a pc and a mac for develpoment purposes, however i still want to be able to play eve online.

I have two options :

Get an Mac book pro (15in retina display) and a desktop pc

or

Get a Mac desktop and a Gaming portable

either option sets me back about the same amount, as a gaming laptop is quite expensive, so lets say for the sake of argument that money is not the issue here (the company is paying for it so... ;) i really dont care), however i have never played eve online on the mac and dont know what the performance / look and feel is like...

Anyone with experience of playing eve online on the mac care to share their experience?

I do most of my gaming on a PC (Win8), but I do have EveO installed on my Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) as well. Fan always kicks into high gear when I run it, but aside from that, haven't noticed any issues.

I'll be honest, the mac version isn't the best. But, I have had absolutely no issues since Retribution whatsoever. But mainly, I play on an iMac with windows bootcamp and never had any issues with performance. Needed both anyways since :softwareengineer:

basically feels the same (7% theoretical framerate drop on equivalent hardware). Go for the retina mbp and a decent desktop Big smile

Eve seems to be as reliable on the Mac as Windows. However better performance as a whole is to be had running Windows. That said I still can run 5 clients on a HD4000 i5 Hackintosh.

I'm running EVE on a 2011 MacBook Air until I get my gaming rig built in early 2013. My only complaints are I occasionally crash (two to four times a month) and that my fans are louder than the space heater I keep next to me. I keeps graphics low but it still looks pretty. Can't wait to get that PC built though Lol

I wear my goggles at night.

Any spelling/grammatical errors come complimentary with my typing on a phone

I have 15 MBPr and tri-box plus Virtual Box VM, browser, no issues. For what it's worth. Message me in game if you have any questions.

Retina Mac Book Pro is awesome. Really. There is nothing that compares to that screen. You should get it. Even EVEO looks good on it. The Mac EVE client have some stability issues though, but it is still very playable even on maxed out settings (havent been in a several hundred ship fleet fight though) at least if you turn down resolution to more standard 1440*900 (retina is 2880*1800 on 15'' !!). And if you prefer windows there is always bootcamp.

or get a hackintosh and save a couple grand, however if your business is paying for it get a mac laptop. the desktop isnt worth it. in the end your company is wasting money by getting a mac in my personal opinion...the argument used to be for graphic design it was better....except if youve seen adobe creative suite on both computers lately, there is absolutely no difference now that they both run on the exact same architecture.

also Lexmana, you should look into 120hz screen's as well as the difference between TN and IPS as well as other monitor types...truly a good read which will also explain to you how retina is just an advertising buzzword.

Nothing against apple, but I simply don't see a point in them. of course I am someone who doesnt have trouble writing and compiling a custom linux kernel so im not exactly the average joe.

Mac's are truly made for beginner PC(PERSONAL COMPUTER) users. any advantage they used to have in graphic design or design in general was removed by their switch to Intel processors.

there is one single program i wish was on PC from a mac....Final cut pro. Beautifully designed application...however since apple bought out avid......yeah the chance of that coming to windows/linux close to nil.

I play on a 2007 MBP running bootcamp.

I gave up on the Mac Client after it was literally unplayable for over a month.

I'd go with the Mac Laptop and PC Desktop. You'll get a much better desktop for your money, and it will do games much better.

Your Mac Laptop will also be able to handle EVE just fine, though I'd try it on a VM client, because that tends to run better than the Mac client (no, seriously).

Have you even tried a retina MBP? In game I don't see much difference (but then I use standrad resolution) but when reading text or surfing the web the screen is so good it looks like fine print on glossy paper ... except it is not. In the beginning it was almost an eyry feeling because I was not used to see such high quality print move or animate. I can assure you it is not just a buzzword.

FOR LAptops you get MACbook pro because it absolutely rules in technology style and productivity

FOR gaming you get - aluminum chasis PC with sufficient cooling and low noise profile. Most games rely on DX, which is a part of Microsoft OS... It is obvious, no matter what hardware, desktop (stationary) computer is meant for gaming and unfortunately limited 90% of the time to MS OS.

Gaming laptops blow major ass, they overheat, they fall apart too soon, the keyboard is wear prone. Do not game on laptops period. (Unless you play minesweeper and tetris)

This post sums up why the 'best' work with DCM inc.

WARP DRIVE makes eve boring

really - add warping align time 300% on gun aggression and eve becomes great again

I already have a Desktop PC that i play eve on at home however when i am travelling i will be playing on a laptop of some sort no matter what.... i have been getting by on a dell with an intel graphics card that just about runs eve but fleet fights are a bit boring because no effects etc...

i will be playing on a portable of some sort at least part of the time.... the question is how do i make that time enjoyable rather than feeling like im paying for crimes in a past life...
