EVE API System. Anyone familiar with how it works?

I have a question about how the EVE API system works.

With out trying to sound to vague Is there a way to merge the EVE API system in with a third party website you create? I know it can be done but I'm not sure to what extent so I should rephrase my question. I've seen it on forums where a pilot needs to enter their API in order to register which in turn also registers them on a communications software (Vent / TS3 / Etc,.)

Question: On a typical site where you have a login and register option Is there a way to set it up (and maybe even merge into your MySQL Databases but I'll get to that) so that a user, when he/she registers, can browser, comment, message on the site as their respective EVE self? This registration database would require API using only the bare minimum from the API to function. Char name, corp, alliance, etc,. Thus allowing you an on-site-profile with your base character information available. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Yes it is possible to link the EVE API into an existing registration system (i.e Forum / Social Networking type site).

How it is done though is a completely different question and really depends on what you are trying to get it to interface with.

I'd like to make the API, the character it's self, fully interactive within the site. For now we'll just go with; I'd like it to function so that when they comment the comment contains their EVE base info. Avatar, Corp, alliance. And a simple profile readout if you click on them. Showing also corp history, same as above, and all other base info you can view on someone publicly via Eve gate or other services.

Also do you know if the 'in-game' recruitment ads function on an API system? or are they static on the server?

Those sticky threads at the top of this forum? They're full of useful info that answer most of your questions.
