I started playing EVE for the simple fun of it and the social aspect of meeting other fans of "online sci-fi" games.

At various times, with various characters, I've come and gone -- RL is like that. The game remains, so do the people -- that's rare in a game.

And if everything goes according to a cunningly conceived and dastardly plan, I'll conquer Hi Sec, single-handedly, in a few years. Blink

as bohoba, or who ever that was, said... Earth and Beyond.

It closed its doors, and CCP wisely suggested/promoted for us to move on in to the game. I did. I stayed. Most of the 'guild' from Earth and Beyond moved in with us, and stayed untill a few years ago. Now it's down to me and a few others. Some so rich they log on every few months to re-start their t2 bpos. I'm not that lucky. (tho 135m SP's and no corp seems lucky to me).

I started playing because a friend of mine told me I would "pull all my damn hair out the first few days" and a lot of reading later, I was enticed into playing this.

And if you're reading this (you know who you are), thanks for pulling me back into the fray.

Friends.

I remember being blown away by the game's complexity and depth, and being so impressed my friends knew so much. Now, they don't play anymore, and in the brief stints they visit again, I'm the one telling them how things work, like when one of my old buddies decided to try out nullsec with me and I had to show him the ropes.

Funny how that works out.

I saw ads for it everywhere and found them so dam annoying, but one day i thought i would actually check out some videos on YouTube. I ended up watching this alliance tournament stuff. Then after that thought i will give it a try. Granted this was only a few months ago. Plus love anything to do with space ships

Because Star Wars Galaxies did the NGE and turned in WoW with lasers, so I quit along with everyone else who thought that WoW was for retards. Star Trek & Old Republic are also just WoW clones with lasers.

At the end of the day, EvE is the only MMO I could find that was:

1) Didn't have a bunch of oversexualized anime elves with bikini armor and swords the size of freight trains.
2) Any kind of functioning crafting system (not as good as SWG's was, but the best still around today).
3) Not a FPS (I've yet to see a FPS that was anything more than a contest to see who has the best hacks).
4) Not another frikkin' WoW clone.

Teaching myself to make .gifs
Subgenius forum directed me to 4chan's .gifs
4chan /b/ had an EvE thread, saw a .jpg of an Incursus and the poster claimed to be "anti-pirate, living in Molden Heath."
Trial account as Gallente
Saw a Thrasher slowboat past on undock.
Full sub as Winmatar.

The visual beauty is a big sharp hook, after that, i stayed because i'm a masochist.

Because having to kill pirates, dog men, those disgusting fish creatures, and the like, and bring back 10 of their underwear or rubbers or what the hell ever, over and over and over, was not demeaning enough.
Cool

I started playing EVE because WoW got boring. I barely heard about EVE and it was the next checkbox on the list of MMOs to try after WoW (it was pretty far down the list). I can't see myself playing any other MMO ever again. It also looks like EVE's marketing is much better than a year and half ago when I started. The Steam sales really help. They were the only reason I tried EVE.

As others have said, for me EvE is the MMO version of games like Elite, X, Homeworld... but then persistent online multiplayer. I was initially drawn by it's level of complexity and meaningfull pvp combat, as well as it's harsh and unforgiving nature.

I tried EVE several years ago, but didn't get into it... i was just too young for it.
Now, a few years later, I tried it again and it just grabbed my attention, I love the game so far (only High-Sec, still a bambi and no knowledge of nothing) I enjoy the interaction with my Corp and Alliance members, and the game is just fun!
It's the Fascination of the Possibilities, the Choices and the Restrictions. The vastness of the things you can do, to modulate your ship, try out new stuff, the sandbo in general and the knwoledge that all those WoW-Kiddos don't even understand the beginning of it and already fail at the tutorial, just because they are not used to reading quest texts, instructions and listening to more advanced players, seeking the interaction with them. I love the interactions with other players and the possibilites, advantages and disadvantages of alliances of corporations, the danger of flying through Null/low and last but least, the dream, the long term goal to effectively fly a Capital Ship, be it a jump freighter or titan, or building your own station...

TL;DR: Because of Sandbox!

after hearing my roommate's ts on speaker every time I visited, and his conversations with his corpmates who had accents from all over the world, I finally turned to him and asked, "what is that game, exactly?"

he gave me a buddy invite and pod jumped me wayyyyy down into curse... first time I died I was like, "oh this could be good." then I started two more accounts for training just before leaving for the US Army......

a year or so later, when I got that dear john phonecall from my wife, the first thing across my mind was,"guess i can't ask her to update my skill queue when I'm in Iraq~"

no more wife. like computer and eve more.

my eve girls will never betray me or leave me--and sometimes they run out of ISK but I can't say no, I'm their sugar daddy. they're the most stable thing I've had in my life over the last few years, and their devotion never changes.

"a pony?! but I wanted a MACHARIEL for my birthday!"

"Roll can you buy me a crystal set?"

"you bought her a nightmare? but EYE [stomps her foot] asked you for a nightmare a long TIME ago... you KNEW I wanted one!"

and they play dress-up for me. THE CLOTHES omg they kill me with the clothes, they want everything!

I tried it because of Spaceships, and I stayed because it offered so much more. I set up in Villore doing missions and every once in a while me and some friends would pop next-door to Old-Man Star for some PVP. We died alot but it was alot of fun. We then joined a 0.0 corp and lived null for quite a while. I quit because of college. I resubbed on and off doing mining and PI in highsec.

If EVE was just highsec I would've probably quit after a couple of days of the Trial.

For anyone who cries about 212 responses, 212 is more than enough for statistical significance in a population the size of EVE.

Things are only impossible until they are not.
