I can't believe no old timers haven't mentioned this yet..

I was a big fan of the old BBS door game "Trade Wars 2002", which was a text-based space
game of intergalactic trade, space conquest and colonization, and of course, spaceships pew-pew.
You would play against other people on the BBS.

Eve reminded me of a super-sized graphical version of that game.

What drew me to EVE was hearing about the famous(infamous) Guiding Hand Social Club story. A 12 month-plus plan of infiltration, theft, and assassination that amazed me. Still amazes me.

I looked at the sort of things I was playing at that time, and they suddenly became dull compared to the opportunities I heard about on EVE.

I joined EvE because of the economy. I've been trading since 2007.

A friend talked me into playing the game

1 month later my friend quit...and I was still mining in a badger around the newbie area...
Pretty much had to make new friends and learn the game on my own.
And here I am, many clones later, moved up in the world, now mining in a Badger MK II Blink

I wanted to go to nullsec and be in a fleet. I got into nullsec in 2008 and have been in many alliances. I also did solo PVP, faction wars, and hi sec pvp.

I liked the idea that when I lost, I really lost something real instead of just an instance or match. I also enjoy the rather romantic notion of fighting for a piece of space that me and my glorious space empire control. This was the hook for me. I've been a successful PVPer in hi , low, and null ever since and these days I live in lo sec.

If it wasn't for EVE's hard core player vs people pvp environment I wouldn't be here today. Participating in CTAs and roams made me want to be an FC, which I became and have been leading fleets ever since.

Personally I think the hi sec training wheels are too good at keeping people safe.

Things are only impossible until they are not.

In an effort to resolve the, "should highsec be nerfed" debate one of the things we have to determine is why new players decide to try EVE.

So GD why did you start playing EVE?

I'll keep the survey open for one week then bring some interesting raw data and statistics. Please fill out the survey Big smile.

I heard it was a place that you could run the same, totally predictable, unchallenging PvE content over and over and over and over without ever talking to anyone. There aren't any other games that let you do this, so I subbed up.

Me too, I was lied to.

System Security Status Level (High, Low, Null) has absolutely nothing to do with whether someone starts playing EVE or not.

I rarely say this, but tying this into what makes a person be interested in EVE is an extremely irelevant, dumb question.

I thank you for your concern I suggest you read the thread "You CAN'T nerf Highsec" for more information.

You can't nerf highsec, because then the new players ...

wait sec...

I wanted to fly amazing spaceships with and against tens of thousands of others in a persistent universe, with meaningful consequences from "death" and RL-friendly skill progression.

Was not disappointed <3

My work friend told me about EVE. I immediately wanted to fly a Scorpion and do ECM. Started 2 accounts in the first 2 days as I knew right away this game was for me. That was 2008, never looked back...
