This is my first month in EVE and I'd like to start by saying THANK YOU!! This game is amazing and im thoroughly enjoying the experience. You all have done an excellent job!

I enjoy being a part of the out-of-game discussions of the MMO's I choose to play because I know how important player input is to the development process. I hope my input will be useful and I hope I can help by tossing in my two cents Big smile

One thing in particular about this game feels entirely wrong - the false sense of "direction" given off by the way that all ships insist on sharing a common plane in open space. Whenever ships come to rest they always correct their positioning so that their bellies all point in the same direction as if, in open space, there were even a proper "up" or "down". This is just simply unrealistic and I think it adds an unnecessary feeling of being bound to a plane rather than freely maneuvering in open space.

What also ties in with this and adds even more to the constriction is how the camera movement is somewhat fixed, rather than being able to move 100% freely.

I strongly think that ships in EVE should lose their subconscious directional positioning and that the camera should be able to move freely around the ship in all directions. Both of these things are relatively small details which would be (I imagine) easy to change, but at the same time they would add a lot to the feel of the game. Missions, combat, fleet warfare, PvP etc. would all remain unchanged and it wouldn't require any drastic mechanical changes, so I don't see any reason NOT to implement this change for the better.

Hopefully players as well as CCP can agree with me. I look forward to your responses!

Directional Positioning has existed in most every serious scifi setting outside of dogfights between fighter craft.

do you know why? because its directional. you have to be able to understand orders adn positions, and since for navigation you divide a system up into a 3-point location sustem (aka, a grid), that gives the map an inherent "up, down, north, east, west" effect, which si USEFUL for navigation.

imagien if your fleet was to meet up at point 33,25,675... now, your ships upside down compared to all your fleetmates, so instead of going to where they are, your going to the opposite side of the system.

the location system like the one in eve ahs been discussed,a dn even in RL its acknowledged that in more "advanced" spacecraft (as in ones meant to stay in space and operate their alongside other ships) would need a common "direction" so as to facilitate cooperation.

its honestly the same reason maps and north/south/east/west was thought up on Earth, so soldiers/sailors/merchants/tyravelers coudl figure out where everyone else was compared to themselves.

I'll admit I've never been in any fleet combat in EVE, but I fail to see how letting the camera and ship movements be less constricted would hinder your ability to orientate yourself in a fleet. Look at Freelancer, Elite, Vendetta Online etc.

I'm not suggesting any sort of huge change in flight controls. I just wish that I could drag-pitch my view in a full loop, or that when my Barge takes a sharp turn it might once maybe turn sideways, or upside-down, and then just stay like that. The point is

Something like that could easily be just toggled in Settings, like the tracking camera.

In Freelancer, after a bit, your ship aligned back to its normal position.

But yeah, I can see/live with the idea of a eulerian coordinate system ather than a cartesian coordinate system. :)

it makes sense from a navigation perspective as stated. Also, I believe the lore says that our warp drives create an unintended "drag" effect, causing our ships to slowly decelerate and stop when we turn off the engines, otherwise they would simply move on forever.
