I'm a relatively new EVE player and have been playing for about two months. My previous MMO experience was limited to a week of WoW and a week of LoTR, both of which I gave up after figuring out what "grinding" is... I've never been a big fan of MMO's, and the typical faults of the genre seem to be absent in EVE.

I'm at 90 hours of game time already and have barely dipped my toes in the water. This game is massive, but the support system and community are incredibly helpful.

Eve has a very forgiving learning curve. Twisted

Here is a helpful Chart comparing it to Wow, and some other older games.

Shouldn't the chart be reversed? Like, have time spent playing on the X axis, and gaming skill on the Y axis? The joke makes sense that way, but not the way it's drawn. Ugh

Looking at it that way does make a lot more sense. must of been a typo on the artist's part. Yeah, that's it.

That chart still makes me laugh after all these years of playing. Looking back, EVE never seemed that hard to me. Probably because I got into a good corp in the beginning.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

I've never heard of 1 year to level 14 in WoW, thought the impression I got from the OP was played on and off for a year; 30-40 hours of game-time past year just screams they weren't subbed the whole year.

40 hours for level 14 is also abysmal. to the point that the op should be embarrassed to even admit that.

I actually started playing WoW a few days ago. With very, very casual gameplay, I'm already level 7...maybe 3-4 hours total of gameplay.

This game is arguably much better IMO...WoW is one of those things I grind at and play while I try to fall asleep lol.

Tried WOW several months ago when Blizzard offered F2P up to level 20.

I now have 2 characters, one on the PVE server, and one on PVP. Both are/were max level after about a week or 2 of casual playing. Got a few tears on the PVP server when I rejected someone's duel request. Twisted

I really tried to get into WOW. Really, I did. I just got bored of the whole cartoony theme park atmosphere.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

Roll

This aside the community has to be good at educating new players because really only until recent history CCP's new player experience has been: "Here's your rubix cube now go **** yourself."

They made leaps and bounds in the npe in the past two years.

Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.com I Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers.

Troll? I am flattered! The truth is, I am a casual player, no matter how much I want to be a hardcore gamer. I will never be an accurate, fast twitcher, so I lean towards the RPG genera.

I played Wow about 30-40 hours (solo) over the last year. I have moved from level 7 to 14 in the last month, so I am getting better... but nothing to brag about.

What does the Eve trial prevent me from doing? So far, it is just hard to play. Much harder than Wow. Good thing I am starting to "get" it. I just brought up an Alt, and it was fun redoing everything that Grondi did wrong. Unfortunately the Alt can't learn, because Grondi is undergoing training right now. I suppose I will figure that out soon enough.

Thanks for all your replies and encouragement. One of you on the chat said: "even if we are enemies, welcome and good luck." That is classy!

I have tons of questions, most of which will be sorted out with practice. Here are two I should throw out:
1) How important is it to join a corp?
2) what questions should I be asking!

Thanks!

Here's an old post of mine explaining some stuff about casual play in EVE... It pretty much sums up a lot of the things many don't think about in such ways about this game - but few disagree with it "overall".

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=776066#post776066

The biggest thing is to find a group to join in the game. Being alone all the time - some find this workable but few are willing to stick around.

Trust in this game is ... As I put it in a different post --

Don't trust anyone but if you don't trust folks, you won't be able to work with them yet... Trusting and getting scammed is your fault. Going it alone and finding this game boring is your fault.

Cognitive dissonance or the juxtapositioning of 2 opposing imperatives with equal weight to each.

One major key to success with respect to remaining in this game is to find a "right fit" group to operate in. Without this, for most, the game dries up and gets boring pretty damned fast.

As such, shop with care - this isn't WoW, there are no safeguards against being slammed and trashed by others. As such, there are groups that only if your attitude aligns with theirs will they tolerate you around - they will literally trash the hell out of anyone that doesn't seem to appreciate their way of playing.

Do be careful but also you will want/need to find a group to fit in with if you plan on sticking around.

Welcome to EVE Forums-- where asking a new player question can get you called a troll, incompetent, and/or a half-wit. As Ray Liotta said in GTA, "Don't take it poisonal." Smile
