Warm clothes, a high tolerance for alcohol & a strong stomach if you decide to try the local "delicacies", watch out for the Mayor of Reykjavik, he likes to dress as a Jedi and, from what I can gather from friends there, is a bit of a nutter. He's also the rarest breed of politician, an honest one.

You'll need the alcohol tolerance, in my misspent youth a friend and I wasted a weekend trying to get two lovely young ladies from Iceland drunk, we failed and they drank us under the table Big smile

For Iceland you shall need the tolerance of the hardcore drinkers of your own country.

These people could probably drink paint thinner and only be tipsy.

Are you referring to North or South Holland or the Netherlands?

As a English gentleman that has lived in this country for now over 8 years, i shall give you my insight lol.

while learning Icelandic is not essential it is preferably if you want to get involved in conversations, i don't know what kind of work your looking for but theirs a fair bit of hotel work about at the moment if you don't mind what your doing, The pay is fairly good and i have even during the crisis way more spare cash that i ever did in the UK.

Transport in Iceland is fairly good, much better than in the UK, however I'm sure many Icelanders will tell you that the public transport is a shame , they need to spend some time in the UK country side me thinks. However if you want to buy a car it can get expensive and be a huge drain on your pocket, but as the citys so small you can walk to most places easily or you can get a bike as there's some very good cycle paths.

The night life is lively and with many pubs and clubs to choose from you will find a place you like, beer is more expensive than in the UK about 5pound a half litre but if your working here you wont really worry about that to much....at least till the end of the month hehe

hope this helped some.

In my experience, Icelanding business culture tends to be a bit nationalist, and employers can sometimes be a bit biased against immigrants. Not always, just a cultural problem Iceland is dealing with.

Ok, never been there myself, but thinking about the average temperatures in Reykjavik, it doesn't seem that cold after all. Anyone here that can enlighten me how much it really fluctuates from those averages? Just thinking because at some parts here in Finland, stats show average temperatures at somewhere around -6c in january, but we have seen it go as low as -40c at the same places sometimes. Same goes for summer +16c averages, but some days it might rise up to +30c.

Also, as Reykjavik is located at the coast, I assume it gets a bit windy there at times? Just interested because I've always wanted to visit Iceland.

Might want to consider what kind of work is available there. 6 months is a long time, and I suspect that it's not exactly average employment opportunities for some of us. Fishing maybe? Bartender? I know they don't have much in the way of trees, but if you're a geologist..

Ironically, for all I don't know a thing about the economy in Iceland, my family on my Moms side, in part, originated there. The other sides English, like my Dads family. I'm basically half and half, with a little more of one than the other, but not if you count the fact that I likely have some on my Dads side way back too. ..and then, there's the Irish I have on my Moms side from a very long time ago too.

I'm actually a direct-ish descendant of this guy according to my Mom, who has a passion for genealogy. On my Dads side, apparently it's Blackbeard, though I'm not sure how. None of it means anything as far as I know. Not anymore anyway.

..aside from the blood anyway; genetics being what they are.

Honestly, aside from the climate and the opportunities for work, I'm not sure what anyone can suggest.

..coincidentally, that's probably the only interesting thing about me. Lol

That was quite a rant you went on there Big smile

Genealogy is like that Smile Too much mystery coupled with the assumption of speculation I think. I've been hearing about this and that regarding it for 20 years and, to me, the best I can follow with any reasonable credibility is back to my great grandparents. Before that is kind of sketchy.

The most interesting person of note in my family, is my Moms grandfather on her Moms side. The guy was raised in an orphanage, was adopted, and became Egbert Arthur Alvis, eventually moving to Canada and becoming a wealthy business owner. No idea who he was or where he came from as he has no birth records.

Interesting because he's completely without a family history that's traceable, and could be anybody.

Sorry to derail the thread. Just got side-tracked. Smile

I like the fact that some of my family is from Iceland, and sort of regret the fact that I know very little about it and have never been there.

Not sure how much help we all were. Blink Best of luck with your journey and I hope you have a good time there. Also, there is always the Snorri program to consider for those over 30 interested in Iceland.

That would probably be a great way to involve yourself with the culture somewhat. It's only 2 weeks though, and I'm not sure what the eligibility requirements are beyond personal interest.

It says on the page there that you have to be from Canada or the US apparently. I assume it has something to do with travel arrangements or maybe directly related to the goals of the program. I assume you're from the UK, from your post. Fortunately though, that means you have less distance to travel to get there..

assuming Icelandic are humans afterall, they should be racists towards foreigners coming from the south. This could be a problem.

A good pack, decent snow shoes, good merino wool socks, waterproof and insulated boots, layered clothing, preferably with a base layer that wicks moisture away from your body, a warm and wicking hat, waterproof mittens (loose finger gloves don't allow enough warmth to get trapped), a good scarf or something to cover your face.

I've never been to Iceland personally but would LOVE to go. Being a former meteorologist though, definitely be prepared for the cold....and you should be fine.

I go well with Quafe...
