What's the deal with YAML?

I remember some time ago (a year or so maybe?) there was a dev blog about moving all the data from the static dump to YAML format.
Is this still happening? what's the status of that project?

I'm writing a third party app and wondering how much time I should spend on the YAML stuff.

It's happening, slowly.

This time round, all the icon details have been stripped from the database, and are in yaml files. They're doing it piecemeal (probably because it's easier)
