Quick question concerning Targeting.

Here is the set up for my question.

I am in a gank catalyst. T2 neutrons, 1 sebo w/scan script, 1 scram, 3 T2 Mag Stabs.

1. I'm in warp to a belt, have my overview set up to display the primary target (terrible standings), secondary target (bad standings) and the sun.
2. I activate the guns and scram before I drop warp.
3. As soon as warp ends, click on primary (red), a mack.
4. I immediately click on the secondary (orange), a retriever and hit lock.

Here is where it gets fuzzy. I was not on the kill mail for the primary. I did start firing and I got concorded. The secondary started taking damage before the primary was dead. I am assuming that what happened is that the secondary resolved lock first and my guns/point switched to it.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could have tested this with rats first. Yes, your guns start firing at the first locked target if you have activated them before any targets were locked.

A guess would be that target 2 has a bigger signature, and you target both target within 1 sec, target 2 gets locked first.

My guess is that the mack had shield extenders which increased its sig radius and you locked it first

Yeah that is odd... I'm assuming you were in a gang. Sounds like to me you locked and attacked the Retriever first despite targeting the Mack first. And while the gang attacked the Mack, you were attacking the Retriever. However, your set up would decimate a Retriever to where you would notice you have the wrong target... But you could have been out of Optimal, as you believed you were attacking the Mack.. so you would place yourself in Optimal for the Mack, possibly reducing the damage done to the Retriever.
