Oh, and it looks good in a sci-fi game, in my opinion.

So, slot in a 3D UI over a 2D UI, and functionally, they both do the SAME thing?
Wouldn't that qualify as blings blings .... aka fluff? Why on earth would a someone overcomplicate things through integration when just the vanilla will do?

Sorry, that's not a convincing argument.

As far as WHY do new 3D UI, I can think of 2 reasons... 1) make CCP actually think about their UI for a change, and 2) we can compress information by moving it to the background, and expand it by moving it to the foreground.

Flashiness for the sake of flashiness can go fornicate itself.

I thought ppl qqed too much so CCP went "heres what you get when you whine: nothing"
and scrapped it

The EVE UI has come a long way.

However, I would REALLY like to see a return of the 3D-Radar-Tactical-Mapp-Thingy in the lower-right hand corner. That thing is BAWSS.

EDIT - Better picture from an old forum thread.

well. Thats MUCH cleaner as the current UI. It even looks like a game about spaceships and less like windows 3.1.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Well, that's actually mkint talking, unless you're both alts of each other. Smile

1. Years back CCP, iirc, did a survey regarding the UI - it was overwhelmingly negative from the players' perspective. They know it's a major issue, so it's not really a matter of them thinking about it. It's a matter of how they'll be spending theirs resources effectively to solve the issue and whether they have a true professional person behind it. It's really simple, if they've got someone with the tenacity, passion and a good eye for consumer end products akin to the late Steve Job, they would have never put out those 3D icons, that we refer to as - brown asteroids, turd ... etc. Zulu's explanation that it was an experiment is really unacceptable.

2. The same thing can be done cleverly in 2D if you really think about it. If you look at the EVE is Real website, it's more of a nightmare in navigation than offering any real value to functions. Then you also need to think on the practicality of retrieving those informations using a mouse. If you make the mouse travel farther and increase the click counts, that defeats the purpose of a good UI.

The above said, 3D UI can be implemented in EVE in several parts to improve intuitiveness e.g. ship navigation, galaxy map navigation, graphical dmg readouts etc. etc.
It's fine if they add real value, just don't get carried away with trying to convert the entire UI to 3D for the sake of flashiness.

Some EVE devs have this knack of re-inventing the wheel and running with hexagonal/octagonal wheels.
They add nothing of real value, but instead make avg user's learning curve much steeper - a problem they're trying to solve in the first place!
I don't know whether this is hubris or just normal incompetance.

Mkint- My favorite example is the ctrl-tab window where you used to be able to easily identify the information you needed and act on that information (i.e. change windows,) now you have to pore over each single icon in turn and try to interpret the meaningless labels that no longer show up automatically. This is anathema to GOOD UI design. Why did CCP do it?

CCP PLEASE if you fix nothing else this will be HUGE as window clutter is excessive. If you would simply just make the CTRL-Tab cycle through open windows and get rid of the pop up window that alone would speed up (without mouse usage) the removal of screen clutter because if you did have this functionality the first thing I would do is create a macro for Crtl-Tab to cycle open windows and another macro for closing open windows Ctrl-W . Also being able to choose which windows are cycleable through an interface menu would be a very good thing.

Carbon UI is supposed to be a part of this solution allowing for some of the UI graphics seen in recent videos

Example you observe an ship on your overiew with the observe button a fly out of what guns are on his ship start to pop out of the ship's model.

The first interation of this was revamped overview icons, Every class of ship had its own new icons they just had problems with it being displayed as different colors.

Future interations could be like a fitting flyout around your ship when you bring up fittings when in space just to start.

Hopefully we can get windows that peel away from viewable when somethign is happening.

But because carbon is built a bit more differently... lets just say they had to start over on the UI and are trying to get it matching to current UI before they start screwing around with changes.

In comparison to the current tac-overlay that old 3D radar in the corner was next to useless. The tac-overlay could use some significant iteration, however.

I would love for optional 3d elements as demonstrated in some videos.

Also maybe a reshape up of the overview handeling.

Hey they fixed the font! Oh wait...
