Wardecs - How does assistance work?

How does assistance work as a defender? We currently have one in another corp I am in with but it seems odd:

A. They are a corp of only 3 members, haven't had a war since 2007.
B. We randomly got assistance from another 4 member corporation. Did not accept (yet).


Is there negatives to accepting help? Would it mean they can also bring in help if we accept assistance? I understand that the wardecs happen because they want to try to gank miners, but if we start accepting help and it backfires because then they can accept members too, would be bad for us.

Can anyone shed some light on how assistances work for defenders vs attackers?

> Not really. Remember that the first ally is free ! Not the others.
