Sod's law in action

FFS!

Just to set the scene, today is my 30th birthday party and my wife has been busy inviting family and friends and working magic in the kitchen with the mother-in-law and I have been banished to the study. People are due to start arriving in about 4 hours.

My wife bought some new curtains and wanted them up to show off tonight. Should be a fairly easy job except that we managed to hit a chuffing water pipe running down the inside of the wall while drilling (what a pipe is running there for I have no idea, it is in literally the last place I would have expected it to be). Cue water spraying 10 ft across the living room, drenching the £1500 TV and media centre and having to shut the water off at the mains.

So we've now got 30 people arriving in 4 hours, a wet living room, no TV or music and no running water.

Luckily our plumber has agreed to come on an emergency visit to repair things but it aint gonna be cheap and it's unlikely this mess will be sorted before the guests are due to arrive.

Arg!

I can't see any possible way of you drilling a water pipe while putting up curtains.

Not to make light but, "That didn't go well".

Not sure if I should say "Happy" Birthday.

Hint for 40th Birthday: don't drill.

I would have said exactly the same thing an hour ago! How can I go from putting up curtains to flooded living room in less than 5 seconds?

Oh well, thanks for the Birthday wishes Lol

Well Happy Birthday at any rate.

Probably a case of cowboy builders, i cant think of any reason why theyd put the pipe there. Is there a bathroom above the living room?

No, we've now traced it to the outside wall tap. It appears the pipe drops down from above as opposed to going up from the ground as you would normally expect.

Plumber is looking at it now, fingers crossed.

Remove the electrics from the room NAO!

Next:
Leave the pipe on, get a toilet roll tube, wrap clingfilm round the inside, fill with washing up liquid, put a cloth around the outside of the tube end, leave water running. Tell guests "Surprise Foam Party" prepare for repair work the following day, and make sure you adjust the stop tap depending on the foam height.

Happy Birthday!

Well Happy Birthday to you too then.

I look forwards to hearing the aftermath of both birthdays and if the TV is still working or is it a job for the household insurance.

Happy birthday man Pirate

I reccomend using a probe in future to detect metal before you drill. Make it a habit to check regardless of how silly you think it may be. I hope the TV dries up in the next few days and you can turn it back on again without having to buy a new one What?

Well on your 40th birthday your wife will ask: "Do you remember 10 years ago?"

And then you both laugh your asses off.

Well, the evening still just about went ahead as planned, due in no small part to the heroics of my plumber who came round within 2 hours and had it repaired inside 40 minutes. Emergency call-out charge wasn't exactly cheap but quite reasonable given the circumstances.

We had to leave the music off but that wasn't a major problem and having tried the TV system this-morning it would appear it is still working (although time will tell whether the water has done any lasting damage).

It was actually a plastic pipe that we went through and so your standard pipe detector would not have picked it up anyway. Personally I think running plastic water pipes in cavity walls is just asking for trouble but it was probably the cheapest method the contractors who built the house could come up with.

Highlight of the evening was the present everyone had clubbed together to get me: A Supercar track day event!

4 laps in a Lotus Elise
4 laps in a Subaru Imprezza
4 laps in a Porche 911
4 laps in an Aston Martin
4 laps in a Ferrari F 360.
I finish the day as a passenger with the instructor doing a hot lap and trying to scare the hell outta me.

I'll probably look to book it up around May or June time. I'm in a much better mood now Big smile

It says it's near Junction 10 of the M40 near Oxford. There's an old airfield there that looks like it's probably a likely candidate, a bit like the Top Gear test track. I guess I'll be given the specifics when I book.

Well Top Gear is near Dunsfold. Mmmmm. Near Ox... hmm Is it near Chipping Norton? Theres an old RAF base up that way.

God my geography sucks now... I used to know Oxfordshire like the back of my hand.

well, piece of advice: Lotus Elise can be a bit... underwhelming as far as looks and engine displacement go, but those things have a really sweet power:weight ratio, so keep the pedal floored at all times.
Subaru Imprenzas have the suspension of a cart wagon. better pack some painkillers for your back because you're gonna need it. besides that, fun car.
911's require some thought on how to drive. it's a rear engine, rear traction car. think of it as driving a flying hammer. Oversteering can be fun tho.
Aston Martins are finesse. only thing that corners better than those is jaguars. Awesome cars tho, and quite confortable for a high-performance sports car.
Ferraris are ferraris. you'll probably won't be able to hear your own thoughts if you manage to rev up the engine loud enough. They also require that you keep your head on your shoulders. Italian cars get really, really mad at you, so handle with care. Personal opinion however, I dislike ferrari.
