There is a book called "How to make friends and alienate people" - I claim to have only read half of it.

The better book written in the 90's was : "How to Separate People from Their Money"

So, wait, I'm confused, when was the world supposed to end, 21.12.2012 or 22.12.2012 ? :p

Cracked has an amusing article concerning this.

The world has ended; this is the end. Shall we start again?

It's Solstice. 21 or 22nd depending on your Calender iirc. Never paid much attention to it, but that's all it is.

Indeed, the days in the northern hemisphere only get longer form here.

The Solstice was exactly 6:12 UTC the morning of 12/21/2012 on every Julian-based calendar.

You need the following:

a. A mystery people can apply grandeur to.
b. A mysterious element giving a date in the near future / combination of words that are "nearly" the same words we use today.
c. Interpretation of these words to apply different meanings.
d. someone with a doctorate claiming the events are true (even doctor's realise that going down in history is more fun than going down on the titanic)
e. 50% reason / 50% cultist
f. broil for 20 years.

So, if the world ended on Friday, the afterlife seems vaguely familiar and seems to have EXACTLY what we had when we were all still alive. Strange, I kind of expected something different.

We use the Gregorian Calender, but good luck finding anything but a continuous count of days for the Julian Calender. Apparently it had an actual monthly calender at one point, but it doesn't have one easily accessible on the internet that I can find.

Anyway, point being that the Gregorian Calender or something along the way ended up with the Soltice landing on the 22nd, and that's what we use now. Depending where you are in the world however, it's debatable as to whether you would be on one calender day or the other when the actual event occurred. Technically, it is a celestial event, so it does happen when it happens, whatever your time of day, or day you happen to be on.

Technically, 0600 UTC would be 2200 the previous day where I am, but that's another calender.
