Well the level of order and practise required to be able to do it text only is massive, Its much easyer and faster usually to do it over voice. Most pvp organisation use outside eve voice so no matter whats happen on eve servers, they can communicate, theorycraft, etc....

You cant use chat or eve voice if you cant login for game.

You can use EVE Voice while on the EVE gate (look up on top menu...)

But your point is valid...Most use 3rd party comms cause it makes them independent from EVE, so even during server downtime they can meet up, chat or discuss stuff.

Heh. Guildmate of mine in another MMO did this because he was embarrassed he had a female avatar. I'm somewhat baffled.

Petrus, if you aren't a sleek black man IRL I will be disappointed.

He sounds like a skinny medium-toned guy to me. But I've been wrong before.

Coms for PvP do not have to equal coms all of the time.

We are almost never on teamspeak unless we are in a PvP situation. The moment a fleet goes up for PvP we log onto our TS server. It is faster and more effective. People have a lot of things going on and being able to snap out orders and responses helps. Our idle chatter stays in our game channels.

Yes, they do exist.

They probably suck at PVP though.

RvB doesn't use Team Speak (or Ventrilo, or Mumble - except for Ganked roams), but DOES use Eve Voice for fleets. Trust me, it's way more helpful to hear someone calling targets than to be scanning text, especially in the middle of a fleet fight with twenty different things going on.

You don't need to be able to talk, but you should be able to hear. Also, turn your music down (or get headphones if you have a lot of background noise) if you can't clearly understand the speaker.

To be fair alot of fleets could in fact run by broadcasts and limited text, but if you can have voice comms why bother? If you have hearing or language issues it sucks but otherwise there is no bad side to voice comms.

Can you imagine trying to have everyone in fleet ask questions in fleet chat and call primaries at the same time? What a clusterf*ck that would be.

OP, you are the first player I have heard of that prefers not to fleet PvP with voice comms.

FC, what do?

I'll just add that the average FC (that's a fleet commander) in EVE is not a 12 year old kid yelling into his mike that's half an inch from his mouth, while his parents argue in the background. I've flown with all kinds of different people, and only very very rarely I have problems understanding somebody. And I am not a native English speaker.

No, it's a 30 year-old acting like a 12-year-old with his wife yelling in the background. ;)
