And this is why you cannot trust people who goes all discouraging about how this or that was bad in a book (or poor Lost), many tend to not get what was it about.
That thing is not Sansha, it is heavily implied and even mentioned by Drem that iy is just a puppet that the real Sansha uses to comunicate, not himself.

I finished reading Empyrean Age about 2 weeks ago

as books go, it wasn't a bad read, but there were quite a few times when it felt rushed from a plot development p.o.v.
and overall id have been happy buying it as 2 linked books
