Thank You. This is the kind of letter I was hoping to see here! Live up to your statements, and EVE will be THE best mmo out there.

Not often I am pleasantly surprised by a press release these days, but you have my respect for publishing a difficult but much needed apology.

I hope eve online can become what the dedicated player base knows it can become.

Now lets see it happen...... And happen right!

Community would rather it be done right and take a bit longer than be rushed and bodged attempt because you are trying to meet a deadline.

Of course the community would also rather it was done fast and right Lol There is a challenge for you all.

Good list of fixes, some well overdue, shame there is no black ops improvements on the cards, but I guess you can't have everything in one go, although I question if Faction Warfare can be fixed in the 11 weeks to christmas.

I hope this is a good sign of things to come.

Thank you for that. It's not an easy thing to get to realise once you've straid off the path.

This reminds me of the time I told a CEO off from another company who just pushed his views regardless of what the research stated the audience wanted. I told him - "It's not about what you want. It's about what the audience wants." - I can still see his eyes looking at me in disbelief that someone told him off like that. I'm glad he listened because a half year of work didn't go down the drain.

Eve Online is the only MMO and game that has ever moved me to actually pay a monthly subscription. In short, great game, great people and great potential.

The biggest obstacle you'll encounter doing anything is yourself.

Well the letter is sincere but as always when writing such letter, CCP & Hillmar now have to cash in the promises given.
However CCP is the only MMO-company I know that actually apologizes to their customers or even acknowledges the as more then just cash cows to be milked dry, so I have my faith on them.

Carefully chosen words. I appreciate your words Hilmar, and I do feel that you have put your soul into this letter.

However, I found you in bed with a doll. You stopped listening to others altogether and did what you wanted to do, regardles of how others felt. It's gonna' take me some time to start trusting anything you say again - so many hollow promises you never made good on and the neglect. I'm trying to trust you again, but it will take some time...

I hope you understand why things can never go back to what they where, and why I will never be able to completely trust you again.

ps: beta forums are beta, and are seriously getting on my nerves now...

Nice letter.
But can we have those new nebulaes if they are not hard to implement? :)

Though the introduction was clearly flawed, our plans for virtual goods are intended to make your playing experience better, not to disrupt it. From a strategic perspective, we had to take these first steps because monthly subscriptions are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. The culture of online gaming is changing, just as the notion of digital ownership did with music. If we don’t evolve our technology, our game design and our revenue model, then we risk obsolescence, and we just can’t allow that to happen to EVE or to our community.

what the ******* ****? These words are absolutely destroyed the meaning of the rest. It shows that you understood nothing!
These words are showing that the letter is fake for all of us.

Hilmar, you can expect me to re sub at the end of the week and adding 3 more subs in a month, I applaud you for saying that you had done a wrong and plan on making things right. Now we need governments to do the same and the world would be happier.

My post anger you? too bad, suck it up and move along.

To quote CCP Zulu's response to his blog:

We're still looking into what graphics and visual aspects we can get in there. I'll make sure we update with that information as soon as we can.

Things like the Cyno effect and engine trails are obviously high on that list.

This is a good blog. Certainly has restored some image to CCP. however there still are some things to point out.

Quote:
The fact is, in spite of our missteps, they delivered some of the most amazing interior rendering and character technology in the industry, and their efforts deserve praise.

No. Optimization wise - this is the worst technology ive seen in 5 years, save for silent hill 5, which was even worse. Rendering wise, the time it took to render it and the way shadows went all over the place certainly wouldn't make it amazing. Sure a lot may have gone into physics, of which we see pretty much nothing, that does not make it allright. Sure you may not have done the best engine, big deal, but at least dont go boosting like you did. Same for your carbon character creator, you certainly arent the first ones to make it like that.

Quote:
Visual self-expression in a virtual setting is a core psychological component of gaming; most people need to see their avatars, or something vaguely humanoid, or else they don’t connect with the game.

I've heard this theory before. It really makes me wonder, what happened to human race? Why make EVE like any other generic MMO?

Based on the numbers of people rage-unsubbing after some words in a blog and then reconcile-resubbing after some words in another blog, this World of Darkness-vampires/emo-game might be succesful after all.

Also, does all this sweet talk mean you're going to pay attention to those lonely Feedback and Issues threads in the Information Portal?

Statement on behalf of CCP from Arnar Hrafn Gylfason, Senior Producer for EVE Online. Good communication and trust between CCP and the EVE community has always been a fundamental priority for CCP and will continue to be so.

I accept the apology. At least we seem to have regained contact. For a long while it seemed that problems with communication were result of CCP not listening. Roll

However, there are more than attitudes that need changing. Now CCP needs to realize that the supercap problem is escalating and doing havoc to eve player base due to the resulting apathy, which you partly helped create with the anomaly nerf. We need changes rather fast. Time is against you.

For the off chance that a CCP dev reads this response, I will link here an excellent blog detailing the many problems of the supercaps. Blog is by one Easley Thames. It should be required reading for Soundwave and other devs in charge of Eve ship development.

Well.

I had a nice, eloquently written post expressing my thoughts on the matter, then your forums ate it. In the course of trying to re-type it, I tried to copy what I'd written before posting to prevent it from being lost if the forums decided to send me back to a blank posting screen...and accidentally managed to delete the text instead with a mis-click. I'm going to try posting this one more time, though it won't be anywhere near as eloquent or concise as my original post (I couldn't quite find the words a second time around, and this will be the third).

Originally, after reading the blog, I wasn't sure if I was going to post a response. After mulling it over in the back of my mind, I decided to throw a few words up on the forums, anyway.

In any case, I suppose it's endemic of the human condition for our leaders to make grandiose statements and promises, only to fail to live up to them. It's something I've seen from just about everyone ranging from managers and CEOs all the way up to just about every member of the government of the country I live in. I'm sure some of them meant well at the time, but they almost always fall short or fail to live up to their promises; it's just how the world works.

I've been playing EVE for a long time, almost a quarter of my life. Since 2004 I've seen the game evolve from something amazing into something that is no longer anywhere near as much fun as it once was. Mechanics changes and sheer population density have reduced something that was once truly enjoyable into simply another way to pass the time. Over the course of the last year or so, this has gotten worse.

Yet...

There has always been something unique about EVE. Despite its problems, there is still something there, something indefinable that keeps me coming back. EVE's potential is huge, so staggering that it almost can't be grasped, if only the developers will take us there again.

The came the revelations and scandals of the last few months, and I found myself forced to re-evaluate the status of my subscription. It seemed that, over time, the game developer that I had once had more faith in than any other, had turned into EA (harsh words, I know). I gave it some thought and decided that I would watch CCP's actions over the course of the remainder of the year, then make my decision.

I was extremely surprised when I read the blog; I had not expected a huble apology from CCP at this point. Most leaders and game developers never admit to a mistake, much less apologize. In fact, I wanted to cheer when I was done reading the blog. However, this lasted only for a few moments before my enthusiasm was tempered by reality. It's easy to make sweeping claims of change, but far harder to implement them.

In short, I want to believe in CCP again. I want to see EVE again become the game that it once was, an amazing sandbox that outshined each and every other game out there....

I'm just not sure that it will happen.

Being a very jaded and cynical individual, I'm going to hope for the best, but expect the worst. Please, CCP, prove me wrong!

P.S. As expected, what I wrote above rambles and lacks significant consistency, but it's what I've got after the forums ate my first two posts.

This pretty much sums up how I feel and not being good with words I could not put it any better myself.

I can once again look forward to where Eve will take us. You have at CCP built what I consider to be the very best of MMO's, now I can't wait to see what the future holds. Together, us as the players and you as the implementers and creators can make this a game that any space fanatic will want to play. Faith restored now watching to see what happens.
