These skills boost your base sensor strength and not just when you have ECCM fitted. Correct?

There is nothing in the patch notes about ECCM, so what do you think Blink

Retribution Patch Notes wrote:
* Radar Sensor Compensation, Gravimetric Sensor Compensation, Magnetometric Sensor Compensation and Ladar Sensor Compensation skills have been added to the market for 180000 ISK each

These increase their specific sensor strength by 4% per level
All rank 2
Electronics Level IV prerequisite
Primary attribute is intelligence, with memory as secondary

EDIT: CCP Fozzie's EWAR thread

EDIT: For those that can't take a hint, yes, the skills increase ship sensor strength (no ECCM module required). Everybody will want them trained. [They also make it slightly harder to probe a ship since they increase sensor strength, though for most ships this won't make a difference.]

On many (most) ships I have tested, the skill to level V does not in any way replace or come close to a dedicated ECCM module before or after the patch.

Certain ships that were more or less 100% chance of being jammed by a single ECM racial jammer now have a reduced chance (85% ish) so there will likely be _less_ need for ECCM in many cases but don't just get the skill and dismiss the module.

Review your fits on a ship by ship, case by case basis. Or you know, volley the ECM ships off the field asap and take the buff for what it is Pirate

As Vanths stated.

My previous statement shouldn't be misinterpreted; I was responding to the OP's question of whether the skills needed a module to work. I wasn't stating that ECCM modules are now obsolete.

For example, Logistics pilots will still want to fit an ECCM module for increased resistance to jamming.

this skill high level should also mix well with sensor backup array.

Got that low slot you slap in say nano or injector jsut because for example, SBA should get a decent boost from it. Not sure if additive (if I am wrong someone please correct me) but if so this gets sba to 68% at level 5 (48% t2 SBA + 20% level 5 skill) . Not bad for a passive boost and if you have the cpu for it it could replace a low slot some may have more out of filling a hole than life or death needing it.

i can only think of two ships where this is relevant: cnr and nighthawk.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Anyone tested if these skills work versus the AI? Or does this question go under the eternal "ECCM in Missions" debate?

Do you mean does ECCM work in missions - the answer is yes and this was answered years ago:

Is sensor compensation skills really worth it?
Personal experience:
PvP . . . none
PvE, Doing missions in my abaddon I had radar sensor strength of 22. My limited understanding of sensor strength is the more the better. Frigates have the least, cruisers more, and BS still more. Abaddon had 22, but was jammed regularly by rats. Enough to make you pull your hair out if you didnt nail the cruisers fast enough. Now Im flying a Paladin, which has radar sensor strength of a wopping 12. When I learned about the sensor compensatin skill I was like, "yippie, mission grinding just became a little less annoying". But at level 3 of radar sensor compensation Ive gone from 12 to 13.4.
If i was getting jammed at 22 in a Abaddon, then there is no way that sensor compensation skills are going to be worth training for if your flying a marauder (or any ship that could really use sensor boosting)
This is assuming that rats are effected by sensor strength.
Am I trying to apply a skill where its not ment to be effective (PvE vs PvP)?
Or is it not just me, and this new skill set is one step from useless and needs a massive buff.

All that being said, I think the new skill set is a fantastic idea, I just wish it was useful in a manor that helps me and others in like situations. Meaning a skill that helps you not get jammed.

If you don't train it to 5, you can't complain that ECM is overpowered Big smile

That's the thing: they really aren't. 120% of nearly nothing is still nearly nothing. These skills really won't help much on marauders or frigs.

On the other hand, the skills do great things for recons and T3s fitted with dissolution sequencers. So in a way it does open up tactical options, just not across the board. Falcons will be harder to counterjam, but other recons will be better able to take them on. Golems are still awful against Guristas, but Tengus are a bit better.

Note that changing the skills to a flat rate increase would fix this, but the consequences of that would also be silly. Either sensor strength would become radically homogenized (at least for older players) or the skills would be worthless on the vast majority of ships. Neither is really better than what we have now.

I'm wondering if these skills reduce the chance of mission npc's successfully using ewar on me.

Gah. Yes. It will reduce the chance that Guristas will jam.

But otherwise, no. Or at least not to anyone's knowledge/testing.
