I suspect Titans were added as part of an over-arching CCP ploy to ensure veterans become depressed and quit. The older you get, the steadily less fun the ships get to fly. This, coupled with a lack of other endgame content for veterans, ensures they don't stick around to make use of their advanced skillsets, keeping the playing field even for fresh newbies.

Benefits of being a Bus driver:

You live in constant danger of being bumped out of a pos by a spy...
You live in constant danger of dumb-thumbing it and jumping into a battle you have no business being in, while your fleet is sitting at the pos with a stupid look on their faces
You're on-call at all hours for ops, and get called nasty names when you can't make it.
You spend hours plotting a course to place yourself on a bridge chain, moving alts about etc, so that you can sit at a pos with your giant phallic symbol, wondering when your actually going to get to shoot something besides a structure..
You finally get to show it off in battle, you get blobbed by 60-80 super capitals, and suddenly you're back in station for the first time in a long time. Sans slave set of course.....


See, plenty of upside!

After Retribution patch titan ships will be the most powerful bounty hunting ships. Since you can get bounty even from POS structures you can simply open fire and collect ISK. 20% of destroyed property value is returned to you as bounty. Of course you need to attack someone/something with bounty on them/it.
