I am having just a horrible time with this quest.

I was able to kill a couple of the pirates but now when I warp back in they burn through my shields immediately and my armor goes quick too. Have to warp out before I even make a dent in one of them.

I have about 220,00 skill points and I'm flying a punisher ....having absolutely no luck. Have tried a bunch of different setups but nothing seems to work.

Am I doing something wrong or am I just too low level or have too weak of a ship?

Thanks.

First: Mission not quest. It's something a lot of EVE players hate (cause it refers to our arch enemy WoW). Just a small reminder.

Second:

Could you list the fit you are using on the punisher, it will help us spot if you can make that fit work better.

Three tips:

Not-terribly helpful tip: The NPCs are mordu's legion. So your Amarr boat's innately high resistances aren't necessarily going to help you much against their Kinetic/Thermal combo, you may need to actually slot resists.

Kind of helpful tip: When you say you're in an Amarr ship and then you complain about your shields going fast, everyone dies a little inside. You're flying Amarr, just pretend that shields aren't even a thing, because yours will pretty much always suck until you're much, much better at fitting and have a lot of capped shield and fitting skills.

Actually helpful tip: Step 3 is a delivery quest. Once you've dropped the drone data thingymajigger in the drop-box, you've completed the mission. You don't have to kill a damned thing.

BONUS ROUND:

1. Remember how one of the missions gave you a book for the Destroyers skill? That was a hint that you will probably need to upgrade to a boat with more guns later on in the quest-line. Exactly where this point is is a matter of personal taste, but it sounds like you may have reached it. While technically the whole thing can be run with a frigate, that's probably not something you'll enjoy as an actual new player.

2. Toward the end of the storyline (last few missions) there are two NPCs that are going to annoy the living hell out of you as a new player: Krystan Parthus, whose name I may or may not have spelled correctly, is in a cruiser with a very high (for a new player) offensive load that can eat you much faster than you can probably eat him, and Dagan has a shield-tanked cruiser that can often heal itself faster than a new player can apply damage. What these missions are trying to get you to do is ask someone for help and form a fleet. Usually asking in Arnon works. Don't worry, you can do this storyline once every two or three months and when you're a veteran other people running it will ask for your help, so someday you will be running it fully loaded in a destroyer or drone cruiser and revenge shall be yours.

To clarify tip 2:

Amarr ships are almost always ARMOR tanked. They don't tank in their shields and it isn't really a problem if your shields die fast. It's cause you are depending on your armor to tank the incoming damage.

And for Bonus 2:

Indeed, if you have trouble to do a mission solo, don't be afraid to ask for help. Plenty of older players who just hang around Arnon for 1 reason and that is to help new players.

I did it for a while myself.

First try at SoE was a slow and nerf wrecking grind.
Second try (with better skills and ships) was a walk in the park and an awesome payback to Dagan.

I've helped couple of new players by assisting in killing Dagan (bringing more DPS) or by helping them tank the room (let them warp out while pulling aggro from Dagan and just tank it while they slowly eat through him).

I guess I was really tired last night! Reading comprehension is a good thing. Woke up today and finished the mission, in less than a minute.

Thank you very much.

Thank you both for the talk about armor tanking as well.

I still need to figure out how to post my fit.

Will keep in mind grouping for the other NPC you listed.

Just in case you didn't discover it yet eve-survival.org has info about probably all missions in Eve so you can check what type of tank you will need and what ammo to inflict most damage upon rats. Also triggers, rats e-war, spawns, etc are descibed. It is also good to check players comments, some report were created few years ago and some expansions changed loot, bounties or something. Basically with this site it is hard to mess up your missions unless you totally derp triggers or get disconnected.

Also usual mission ship progression is like this:
L1 - frigate / destroyer
L2 - destroyer / cruiser
L3 - battlecruiser
L4 - battleship

Of course it varies because sometimes you can do L4 mission in a frigate by speedtanking but if you will progress according to above you should be fine.

Posting a fit can be done 100% manually.
E.g.

High slot item 1 with ammo x
High slot item 2 with ammo y

Med slot 1
Med slot 2

Low 1
Low 2

Rig 1
Rig 2

Etc.

Or the bit more automated part:

Download EFT or EVEHQ and build your exact fit in there. Both have an option to export the fit for EFT which can be pasted here.
