Just type calculator while on the start menu it should bring it right up. This works for anything thats hard to find Big smile

There's no start menu... Cry

There's a start screen thingy with a bunch of windows though What?

imo this whole thing is M$ banking on selling a lot of their tablets. Meanwhile Google Nexus 7 is projected to move 5 million units by years end, and probably greater numbers next year. After all, opensource Android doesn't force you to use a keyboard to run your tab (or cell) as M$ does. imo the OS misses the mark on being a committed PC OS at the same time targeting devices which it makes more difficult to use.

I'm in it for the money

Windows 8 doesn't look bad, it just looks like it was made for tablets and that there's no reason to change from Windows 7

Now, more than ever, we need a dislike button.

Oh I agree on that, for sure. But it's like M$ is headed in that direction, as mac is pretty well dumbed down, especially ipads etc. But at least apple is keeping it separate, not trying to make one OS for everything. I'd never put Android on a PC, tablets work great for what they are, while I want developer and hard-core gamer power on the PC - and Laptop to a lesser degree. I know it's still under the hood, but the directional move of the presentation (UI) is disconcerting.

Some IT professionals argue that the UI is the system from a User Perspective. I happen to agree with them mostly... Users have openly revolted against perceived bad user interface design/implementation (remember Unified Inventory)??

Whether it serves the greater good is irrelevant as this is how users experience the systems we place in front of them.

running windows 8 here, gotta say that no matter how AWESOME the underlying OS is, the interface will be always one of the most important things, and METRO and W/E will never be up to the level of the previous version and needs a lot of work on it.

I mean wtf I need 4 clicks to turn off. the windows update interface its uncomfortable to use and hidden in hell, and I use full applications I have absolutely no use For ANY metro app at all, so its just a lot of memory being wasted or waiting to be closed by the OS once I fill my PC memory (that if I ever manage to somehow use 32gb of memory) , I need to multi task a LOT and having my alt tab jump to metro when I need it to jump to some other app is frustrating as hell.

additionally if lets say I have eve playing and media player behind for music and I decide I want to change the song playing, the windows key no longer brings the taskbar in front so I can play the next song, instead it ******* jumps back to the metro desktop where I cannot do anything so I have to then click on the desktop menu, maximize the media player change song, re-minimize and bring eve fore again. when previous I could just press windows key, press the next or back button on the taskbar shortcut buttons and presto, tho yeah I could use a global hotkey plugin too, but then that means I have to install a third party plugin just because MS ****** up and didn't think of desktop real users.

for those who use winamp, jump to and extra functionality by definition are third aps since they are plugins so don't even come saying stuff like "use a real player" or alike.

I m still trying to find a way to disable the fast boot option since it so happens my very specific hardware config makes it such that if the computer is turned on and it does a fast boot, the GPU driver is left unstable and will eventually with 100% chance, crash on me. so I have to restart.

then add to that stuff in my job, when I have to setup a computer fast and I want it to join a domain instantly, I cannot just install and set it to join a domain, no I have to ******* burn a whole new disk using a cryptic annoying interface from MS to configure the installation to join a domain and god forbid I make a mistake typing something because the installation will go completely nuts.

I used to use an alarm gadget on my pc to wake me up, along with a pictures gadget to see lil pictures of my girlfriend, while I work or when doing other stuff, and to see the computer cpu use and alike, on a fast easy way on my desktop, now all that is gone unless I want to use a royal screen state wasting space piece of **** as the metro interface, if I had wanted a HUMONGOUS icons desktop I could have just set the icons to be extra large...

etc etc etc, I could continue this RANT (my first rant ever on this forum) for like 80 or more pages about windows 8... but I will just say this to resume it all.

The kernel its a unique piece of art like those that MS never ever created before (still tho not as efficient as they like to lie)

but the UI its the worst nightmare I had in my life ever and whoever though that slapping and forcing a tablet UI on a desktop system (and EVEN ******* WORSE ON A SERVER INTERFACE *windows server 2012*) Deserves to be stabled in the rear with a spear until it goes out through all his body and gets out of his mouth, Dracula style... and yes CCP you are free to censor that part, I do consider its a bit overgross... but I m pissed...

That's why I use Linux for my servers (LFS + Blackbox). Well not that they would put metro ui on server editions, but just that they suck and obviously would put metro ui on a server edition lol just lol

typical windows release cycle,

@shahfluffers +1 for the xkcd link
Vista is actually quite good. The problem was the original Vista was terribad and it took them a while to fix the problems..

I don't want to get Windows 8 because I'm used to Windows 7.
And I have no reason to upgrade. I don't need that stupid metro ui to mess things up.
Here's to hoping CCP will release a linux client.

The same reaction was given for Windows 95 when the start bar arrived and now everyone is wanting it back! Roll

use WIN+T to bring the taskbar above everything else.

use win+R then type shutdown to shut down quickly, or place a shortcut on your desktop (i agree the shutdown button location is stupid)

open the control panel, click power options, then click change how the computer sleeps, then disable fast boot. Your computer will boot normally from complete shutdown now.

and finally, to fix all your problems easily:
