Why do you think that veterans have more alts than new players? In my experience it's the opposite. New players often create multiple accounts to train in several areas at the same time: A mission-runner, a trader, a hauler, a manufacturer, a pvp pilot, maybe even a capital pilot. They think this is the only way to 'catch up' to the vets in any reasonable amount of time (and they're not totally wrong).

I used to have four active accounts with four very specialized characters, but after two years or so, my four main characters had done so much cross-training that they kind of blurred into one another. So I stopped training two of them and transferred them to my other accounts, leaving me with only two active accounts.

Why would a veteran want to have a ton of alts when he can do everything with his mains? Unless for specific purposes like training spies, of course.

I'm basing this off my personal experience. The easiest and best ROI way to multiply my isk is to expand sideways, not upwards.
In simplistic terms, that means buying 10 Retrievers instead of 1 Mackinaw, or 10 ratting Talos instead of one Mach.

EVE has become to many simply a drive to acquire the maximum possible amount of ISK, then reinvest that isk into making even more isk. I know noone who pays with RL cash any more. I know noone with less than 4 accounts. The colossal influx of isk into the economy due to this attitude, as well as the huge increase in number of PLEX-funded alts ("sideways" expansion) means a combination of increased PLEX demand and increased ISK availability that grows at an exponential rate (like the wealth of committed isk-makers). Causing exponential PLEX price rise and eventual collapse of the entire system.
