CCP a word about Drones..

I will first say that I haven't played in quite some time, but I've kept my account subbed to keep my skills training.

I have been reading through the new ship updates and noticed Drones are going to play an important role in many of the new ships, as a long time drone user, I find this great. When I started this character I skilled him directly into the Arbitrator, later the Vexor & Myrm and finally the Curse.

I found drone ships like the Vexor & Myrm to be outstanding platforms for low sec piracy away from the blobby areas. These ships allowed for a great range of targets due to their ability to do damage with both guns & drones and the awesome repping power of the Myrm and the Vexor being almost always under estimated.

There was a problem that eventually led me to stop flying these ships in favor of straight-up gun or missile platforms and that was the cost of drones. The Myrm just became ridiculous followed not far behind were the Arbi & Vexor both as T1 cruiser hull would routinely cost upwards of 5 mil isk a load out just to carry a full bay of drones. I think the Myrm was closer to 7 mil at the time.

I just logged in to check the current prices and warriors & hobgoblins were both about 500k each. I didn't bother to check meds or large because for just a set of 5 lights you are looking at 2.5 million which is absurd when you consider drones can be destroyed in combat unlike any other weapon system and are almost a disposable weapon system.

This kind of pricing kills the long term affordability of using these ships over a gun or missile platform ship. It's quite honestly why I stopped flying the Vexor and switched to the Rupture for a solo cruiser. At the time my Vexors were costing me easily 5 million more than my Ruptues and at today's drone prices I can easily tell you that's gone up by a large margin.

CCP, I'm hoping you will look into this and do something that will allows the new drone ships to be cost effective just as I hope they will be combat effective.

So you want CCP to lower the price of an item when it's dictated by the players?

No I want CCP to look at the cost of fitting out primary drone dependent ships vs other combat ships and make a sensible decision that realigns their load out costs to other ships. CCP has the ability to adjust the material required to build drones.

Drone ships like the Vexor & Myrm for example also carry ammo.

So players chose how many tech moons or where they would be would be placed at? Players decided to hand out T2 BPOs and then stop handing them out? Perhaps you can tell me about the player council that decided drones would be destructible.

CCP cannot dictate the price charged for drones, but can change the cost of making them. Smaller amounts of moon goo, lower time to invent the T2 BPC, less minerals for the T1 base, and so on.

On the other side, drones are rarely lost in missions, so the high cost there is not relevant. Ive tested the new AI on the test server and its still easy to keep you drones alive. In PvP people like to overheat guns and whatnot, damaging them and running up costs to repair them. You cannot overheat drones.

Drone loss and replacement is a definite problem. Especially for Gallente hulls, since CCP in all their genius decided that Gallente should only have room to carry 1-2 flights, while Amarr can carry 3.

But I'm just going to come out and say it - drones should not be destructible by regular means. That is, if you want to kill drones, you need to equip a specific anti-drone module, like a smartbomb or a new module similar to defender missiles, but specific against drones. The very idea that regular weapons can target and reliably hit drones is absurd. It should only exist if it is also possible to aim for and destroy turrets and launchers attached to ships.

And overall, drones need a complete overhaul. Including drone AI, UI, stats, mechanics, etc. Complete and total 100% tear-down and overhaul. Which probably means it'll never happen.

Pull in your drones before leaving the field? Learn how to micromanage your drones in in combat? Remember that drones never run out of ammo and don't use any of your ship's resources... meaning they can fight almost indefinitely so long as they or their host ship are not dead.

You are wrong about the new AI not hammering drones, and you have been told why in several threads.
CCP has stated there is a "defect" in the AI code, which allows 2nd and subsequent releases of drones to be ignored by the AI.
CCP plans on releasing the code with this "defect", and then "fix" this issue at a later date, post Dec 5th.

So yes, drone users will be OK on Dec 4th, but some time down the road, after CCP has put out all the other fires they are introducing in 2 weeks, heavy and light drones will be wiped out as PvE platforms.

…until people learn to fit the ewar and other aggro managing mods that keep the AI from caring about the drones — a strategy that has been successfully used for 3½ years now.

Even now, without exploiting that bug, you can ensure that your drones don't get hammered by the AI.

Which begs a painfully obvious question: why did CCP waste all that time and manpower fiddling with the AI, if even the new AI is so ludicrously easily circumvented?

Obviously anyone that is good at flying drone ships knows how to micromanage their drones in combat, and pulling drones in before you warp is a very situational thing. Anyone that has a clue and has been dependent on drones in combat, has also had to leave those drones on the field a time or two dozen.

Drones not using resources is countered by being destructible/lost. Not by costing more than the price of a Rifter each..

I just finished heavy assault ships 5 so my Ishtars have a big enough belly for all the throwaway drones but recalling drones constantly will just be a pain. I'll just get a Machariel sooner or later. Straight

Don't lose your drones and you wont have to buy new ones. Same principal as ships and all other modules. If you cant afford to fly T2 use T1. If you decide T2 actually is worth 2.5mil over T1 then buy the T2 and stop making useless badly thought out posts.

They are 2.5mil because thats what almost everyone will happily pay for them.

2.5mil for something that puts out the dps of a small frigate really isnt much. If it feels too much you are punching above your ability and should revert to T1 until your chest hair starts to grow.
