The "workaround" lets you get in and install/play games even if you weren't chosen for the closed beta? Am I understanding that right?

Yes, install Steam and run:

steam steam://store

in a terminal and you get right in.

It appears they closed the hole. I managed to install and update Steam, but after logging in, I got a message about the closed beta, and it died.

Edit: Scratch that. It only happened the first time I launched it.
